I'm not prepared to accept that everyone's BT stack implementations are so consistent as to allow the subject to be summed up in that manner.

That may be your choice but as things currently stand, that is the situation. Besides, I made this post because I was seeing comments about certain service providers (ATT/Verizon/T-Mobile) being supported/not supported. The providers have, of course, ABSOLUTELY, nothing to do with whether a phone will connect over bluetooth or not.

...and yes, for the most part, bluetooth implementations across manufacturers are pretty consistent.

They may be becoming more consistent, but I started with BT applications testing in 2001-ish, and stacks varied significantly.

Also, carriers have significantly impacted BT functionality. Verizon prohibits file transfers from taking place, and that led to wholesale OBEX problems for a long time. So it is conceivable that carriers no longer influence the BT implementation, but they have in the past, and I know of NO reason to blithely assume that it has completely stopped...

I get the feeling that you think like an engineer, and I think like the guy who has to make it work after the engineers build it.

Hey what retrofit did you do? I just purchased an '0 e92 w/o bluetooth, but my CA told me that it did, so they are paying 1/2 of the cost to put it in, but I'm still waiting on the info from them about what parts they'll be putting in there. I'm not sure if is replacing the TCU or getting some kind of ULF retrofit.

What did you do? What did it cost? and does anyone else have any thoughts?

It will probably cost me $600, so is it worth it? What is a good Verizon phone that works well?

thanks!

I just got a W755 (work provided/paid - yeah, I'd love a PDA but it's hard to justify the cost when I get a free cell) and have tried to pair it with my 07 328xi coupe... I get the car to the point where it says "activate or pair phone" and then I put my phone in "add new device" mode but the phone keeps coming up with "no devices found."

Could the 07s/coupes be different from the 06s/sedans? Any hints on what I may be doing wrong?

No i-drive here here or logic 7, just the basic stereo... The owner's manual only addresses i-drive operation, but it must be possible to pair something to a non i-drive car or the radio wouldn't be asking me about the phone?

oh well... I don't spend a lot of time in my car or on the cell, can live without it.

My 07 328xi wagon likes my wife's W755 just fine. Been a long time since I paired it but if you keep having trouble, drop me a PM and I will go out and do it again and write down the steps...

I got it working tonight... when my radio said "pair phone" I thought that meant it was in "ready to learn" mode, didn't realize you had to press the "BT" button and navigate to discovery mode. Took a couple tries and the last thing my phone said was "connection failed" but I can now send and receive calls through my car! Tip, when it wants a passkey, the manual said the default is usually 0000, seemed to work for me.

Now, if only you could read the radio LCD while wearing polarized sunglasses

It is really simple to understand how this works. I'll try to explain it quickly here.

Every bluetooth enabled device acts both as a receiver and a sender of wireless (2.4Ghz) signals. That is needed to establish simultaneous 2-way communication between 2 bluetooth enabled devices. In the world of bluetooth technology there are several standards of communication which follow predefined sets of rules and are designed for different purposes. These standards are known as Bluetooth profiles.

You can read more about the different Bluetooth profiles and their purposes here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_profile

Now, there is a specific sets of profiles that the BMW bluetooth module supports. One is HFP which allows the bluetooth module to "stream" voice over the wireless. This allows you to use your BMW audio system as the phone receiver a.k.a. handsfree.

There is also another profile called PBAP (Phone Book Address Profile) which allows your bluetooth module in your BMW to obtain the phone book that is stored on your phone. As a result, you can see who is calling you on your car display and you can also scroll through your phone book and make calls right out of your car audio system.

So, to find out if your phone will work with your BMW bluetooth module you need to make sure:

1. Your phone supports both HFP and PBAP profiles
2. Your BMW bluetooth module supports A2DP and PBAP profiles.

Example:

My G1 (HTC Dream) supports both HSP and PBAP profiles. I was able to sych my phonebook with my 335i right away. I was doing this way before the G1 made it to the approved list of supported phones on the BMWUSA.com

I recently bought Nokia N900. It currently does NOT support PBAP. As a result, I can only use my bluetooth module in my car as a hands free. I can't see who is calling. I can't scroll my phonebook. I can only answer and decline calls.
How do I tell what my BMW BT modules supports? My phone supposedly has HFP and PBAP.

The BT Hands Free works fine, but the phone book just says 'Please Wait'

I am hoping the upload of the addresses is just super slow and they will eventually appear?

My new Nexus One (on T-Mobile) is connecting with the car but not functioning as it should. I think it even prompts me to connect a phone compatible to the car... my iPhone synced perfectly with all the contacts. The Nexus One seems to perpetually load and stays stuck like that forever.

Anyone have the new Nexus One that has successfully paired it with their car?

I don’t know about Nokia N97 but the Nokia N97 mini pairs perfectly with the car and show the different numbers storage in the contact and signal strength, the only issue is this:
The contacts list is not correctly displayed on my E92 I-drive, despite I have selected "sorting contacts by first name" on my mobile phone (Nokia N97 mini), it continues displaying by last name. On my oldest E90 the contacts list is correctly displayed on the I-drive display.
I already switch off the mobile phone off for a few minutes and then on again and also run through the pairing routine for several times, but nothing.

Any suggestions?

Nokia N900 works sluggish with the bluetooth in the car. Sometime I can't even hear the other person but they can hear me. My old phone, Nokia N95 worked great with the bluetooth except the phonebook contacts just doesn't want to sync with the car .

Any one tried the Nokia 5230 already? It's not an expensive device but has all the features I am looking for. I have to know before I buy it or else I cannot use it in my car... It is not listed in the "Portfolio Snap-In Adapter Bluetooth" that my dealer printed for me a few weeks ago...

Thanks

Just got my car and had trouble getting my Nokia 5800 and my wifes Nokia N97 to work with the car. I had to set the car to search for devices then get the phone to search for new devices at the same time so that they could see each other. When i'd done this it turned out that the contacts couldn't be seen by the car. Supposedly it's got something to do with the Symbian OS. I found that if I marked the contacts I wanted and sent them as business cards via bluetooth to the car then nothing at all would happen. However, if i switched the ignition off then back on, as if by magic the contacts i'd sent appeared on the car. That was about a 3 days ago and it still works fine, all the contact are arranged properly as well.

No dice with Nokia N900 here as well. When it comes to the N900 devices the problem is that the Bluetooth deamon (bluesz) does not have the PBAP profile compiled in it. Also, another complication comes from the fact that the N900 will aggregate various information about your contact like IM accounts, physical addresses, etc etc. When you try to send that information to your BMW, it is dumping everything and this confuses the car BT module.

In the case of the N900, some people have had limited success by following this process:

1. Install the Petrovich app from maemo.org
2. Go to Contacts -> Export
3. Follow the wizard. At some point it will ask you to choose VCARD format. Choose version 2.1 not 3.0
4. When all of your contacts are exported, they will be somewhere on your filesystem.
5. Find the actual vcard files and use Petrovich to send them to Bluetooth.

Again, this is limited functionality and it works only if you just have Name and phone number in your contact details....
