Moral dilemma of sorts, get home to find the we've had a door knocker from a reputable childrens charity trying to extract a £5 a month direct debit. Well trained, the Mrs told them to come back when hubby home. They haven't yet, but prompted a discussion about whether we should do more than £5/month to the RSPCA and a few random acts (marathon, 3 peaks, etc) I've done in which I've raised approx £3k in 4 years for good causes.

Be interested to know what others on here do, esp given the wide diversity of members on here.

For the record I hate the 'chuggers' , never give to 'beggars', but will usually sponsor someone I know personally.

Interesting discussion. I don't do enough by far but would love to do more. The wife gives monthly to 2 or 3 charities so I supposed that's my cash as I pay her wages . I over the last few years have given a sizeable chunk to comic relief, for no other reason but for the collective effort involved in the evening of 'entertainment'; I have no draws to any particular charity (maybe guidedogs for the blind as we trained a puppy when I was young).

Any opportunity to get my hand in my pocket is always welcomed, whether I know them or not, I've sponser a few folk on here for various things but never 'officially' met them.

Should do more but my spare time to do things is always restricted (yes, I should make time).

i would rather give it to my kids, all the money in the world will never sort out the problems in the world, if i am walking past a cancer pot i may chuck in loose change, but asking people for £5 a month when the uk has there own problems is taking the piss

I do, based on set criteria.

For example I won't give to 'megacharities' like UNICEF because fundamentally I believe they waste more of my ££ on their various overheads and bullshit like sponsoring football teams. I also hate adverts made by 'sincere' celebs and ANY form of charity that involves monthly contributions because they fund a pot and not a specific need.

I do sponsor friends or family and I am happy to participate in charitable events. I also donate on an ad-hoc basis to specific charities or causes.

For the most part I think people should donate as they see fit so I don't really think my way is right as such.... More just a series of guidelines I like to follow!

With that in mind, I'd tell the chugger to fuck off.

I do and really like it.

My employer takes a couple bucks off each paycheck which makes a good amount at the end of the year to give to the charity cause I want. I also like emptying my pockets of any coins when I see those kiosk without even checking the cause.

I also participate in LEUCAN (Leucemia Canada) and its called the shaved head challenge. To live like kids who got chemotherapy and loses all their hairs in the process.


You basically let your hair grow for a couple months and make a fundraiser with your head. Workmates and friends donate to get my head shaved. Last year i've set a record and got $1105 in 9 days!

Its a very nice day every year, lots of kids out there that need that help and I initiate a new person to the concept every year.

Next year, one of my friends get her head shaved and she's a girl having her hairs past her shoulders; that should be a MAJOR fundraiser.


all in all, I love doing this. Life gave me a LOT and I really started my life with NOTHING. I had to fight and earn every penny I have; and for that, I am thankful and I understand that its not everybody that have this chance. I almost died at two weeks of age and a program like LEUCAN took care of me (But I didnt have leucemia; thank god).

A so little gesture on our part means LIFE to some others. Dont be greedy; you'll like it and be hooked to it.

When the chuggers stop me in the street i ask them how much they make from each person signing up .... usually cuts their speech somewhat.

And the OP should be aware that the doorstep lot will be chuggers too in case he wasn't already.

I used to give more but since having kids of my own I just can't really afford to. We try and give to cancer charities when we can because of our family history and also we sponsor a child in Afghanistan. I've also sent lump sums for children born with problems such as cleft palates.

I once saw a guy with a guide dog outside Tesco collecting for the blind. As I was sat in my car having a sandwich I watched him take his dark glasses off put the dog in the back and drive off!

My view on this is that the 40% tax, plus NI etc.. Is charity enough.

Especially when you see all the "charity cases" on TV looting plasma TV's and setting fire to family businesses.

Well the UK government is still throwing cash into humanitarian aid. Up until recently they were ploughing millions into India.
Then there's all the peace-keeping missions the armed forces do which is all funded by the tax payer.

I hate the way I'm supposed to feel like a scrooge for passing a charity box shaker when so much of my money is already being given to the UN.

I do give to charities, mainly cancer charities but i never hand over money or signup for things when approached in the street or at my door.

Sadly my wife's mum died a few weeks ago of cancer, feeling completely helpless i decided to try and do something positive. Being very impressed with the care that the hospice gave to my mother in law i've decided to start a charity to raise donations for these hospices.

The plan is to move it to being mobile phone and internet based donation system and operate on skeleton costs, apposed to traditional fundraising, coffee mornings, walks etc with staff and a hq. It won't fund research as that is established but more help and support is needed for the excellent job these people do for people who are terminally ill. They exclusively rely on donations.

Trying to set it up in my spare time and i'm building the systems from scratch, hence being up at 1:30am

I do and am pleased that I can my favourite is Guide dogs for the blind, I sponsor a young male Labrador puppy who is called Angus £10 per month is nothing and makes me feel better.


What I cant do is sponsor all this Foreign Aid shit , the problems are to big with like 10 children in tow , My wife said how well the mother looked holding her emaciated 6 month old child,That was given less than 50% chance off survival .


Children in need , Comic Relife , Walk or life ,Water Aid , Yes I do .

I support local Air Ambulance Service, Local Hospices.

Why gives ludicrous amounts to overseas causes, when there are pensioners and people who fought for this country, living on the poverty line, and freezing to death in winter.
