Warranty
Here is my experience:
My car suffered a hit and run, and I used my insurance to cover a OEM headlight replacement by an indy shop. Two weeks later, my adaptive headlight failed, and I brought it back to the dealer. The SA gave me crap about how this wasn't installed by a BMW certified repair center, so I'd have to pay. I talked up a sh*t storm and ended up talking to the service manager. He ended up apologizing to me and replaced the headlight at no cost to me (new headlight housing had a faulty wiring issue). He explained that as long as an OEM part was installed according to OEM specs, the warranty for that part and any related part will not be voided regardless of who installed it. Now I understand that the statement is vague, so I'm not going to pretend like I understand fully what it means. I do think that this is a gray area though.

'It's cause you have to cut the OEM muffler off. I had it installed at the port depot when the car came in and it was $1946! So it looks like you're getting a deal.

Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act
read up on it, they can't just void your warranty because of an exhaust. |

Paid $140 for my install; which included all the cutting and welding, but also fitting new tips. There is no such dealer that would convince me that installing an exhaust at an indy or even myself would be a good reason not to honor any part of the warranty. The only thing I would accept as a denial is IF your exhaust is liable for the issue you complain about when you go for a given repair.
Bought the PI online and installed it myself + Bought the PE online and an indy installed it. Saved TONS of money and I wouldnt even worry about my warranty if I had any left.

Warranty issue would only be for that part or associated parts. Whoever said the engine is completely wrong as they would have to prove the exhaust install caused the problem. In the M3 case cited, the exhaust bolts to hangars in the diff area and they were re-installed incorrectly causing that issue. I would go with the most cost effective choice and frankly if they'll install for $200 and you have a 15% off coupon you'll be hard pressed to beat that final number.

There's room to move on the exhaust in terms of price...I got mine installed from a dealer in Montreal for around $1300 total and they were originally asking around what you said. Not huge savings but at least something...maybe try another dealer or showing them the price you found somewhere else and they will most likely help you out.

Hey guys, so I'll be ordering my PE from Tischer for $1,095 and then getting it installed at my dealer like I originally planned.
Get this though, they said that the estimated time of installation is 3 HOURS!?!? They charge $120 bucks an hour for installation, WTF? When I asked the parts guy why it would take so long, he said he doesn't know, it's because no one there has done this install on my car before. I said that I've read about people installing the same exhaust at other dealerships at a fraction of that price, and he still replied with I don't know. However, he did say that it is just an estimate and it could take less time. |

They're probably quoting what BMW says it takes to install. 3 hours is ridiculous ... it should not take that long, the PE is not a complicated install. By going to the dealer you're taking a chance they will bill you the three hours though. $360 is just a ripoff.

Bullshit. I'm repeating myself but since you didnt read it the first time, maybe this time you will... I took mine to an indy shop and really I had to explain to him what goes where (just to prove how much he didnt knew what this exhaust was all about) and in 40 minutes not only he welded the exhaust and y-pipe into place, but he also cut the old tips and installed new ones. So if you're feeling comfortable paying a guy 3h for a 30 minutes job + 2h30 hour break, your call; but if you're asking us if its what its worth, we're all saying NO.
Also, the dealer doesnt weld the exhaust to install it, they clamp it on; so it should be even faster then welding it. Go ahead if you want, but I couldnt find any worse way to waste $200. But while you're at it, you should give the whole $1536 to the dealer. Since 1095 from tischer (+ shipping + taxes) + 360 (+taxes for install) will be pretty damn close to the dealer's price. You got a couple options stated to save some money and for some reason, you just dont consider them. So the only other way out is to pay big bucks and buy peace.

However, my car just barely hit 34k miles and I have the extended 100k mile warranty. I might call the dealer and make sure that if I do get the part installed somewhere else, would my warranty still be intact for problems with the exhaust because it is an OEM part? Plus Tischer charges a flat rate of 75 bucks for shipping to lower 48 states, so I would be saving 150-200 just for the part. And yeah, you're right about it not taking 3 hours to do because I want my exhaust clamped in. I'll call some other dealers and see what they quote me. |

no, but i know plenty of SA's (i think they are called, forgot) they all said it will void your warranty. anything that is a engine related mod will void your warranty. now if you know the dealer and have the inside scoop it could be different. anywho if someone had a engine light code and went to a random dealer to get it fiexed and you have an aftermarket exhaust your dumb.

call a random dealer right now ask them if you had a section 3 exhaust modification will it void your warranty. im assuming that 95% will say yes. there are dealers that dont care at all, just befriend them.

all in all i would pay the extra 300 bills to get it from and have BMW install it.
for me its not worth the hassel of going to a shop etc etc. then have an engine light come on go back to the shop repeate. get the problem fixed the drive back the shop once again and repeate. it sounds to me like OP wants to keep his warranty and not want to deal with any of the stuff we might have to deal with. OP if the 300 isnt that big of a deal, i would pay it and be safe. plus you COULD have an engine light come on and might end up paying a shop to swap out exhausts. my 0.2
