mine picked up the tick.
There seems to be two very different ticks. Mine is like this: http://www.rtsauto.com/bmw-e90-valve...ter-ticknoise/ And it seems to be a HEAD issues. If you just have a lighter ticking, it seems to be the lifters. Anybody can provide information that doesn't agree with that? |

Loose- looks like I will be swapping my head on my own (no warranty). my aftermarket warranty doesnt cover "items with service bullitens". Nice, huh.
You can do it for 2-3 K yourself. Trying to decide if I want to mess with JUSt lifters first. |

Nothing like buying a BMW and having to do the work on your own, which is far beyond my skills....good luck going forward.... Yes, it will be covered with CPO, check in with your SA ASAP.

My indie shop recommended that I have the head machined. I think the idea is since the lifters aren't getting enough oil/ allowing enough oil in by design, the newly machined head increases flow and/or pressure of oil to the lifters. What do y'all think about this? It would still be expensive but not as expensive as a whole head job (tee hee) anyway, I am considering this. Unfortunately, I now hate bmw because of how they are screwing us all over with this faulty engine design up top.

i went outside immediately to check to see if it was remotely coming from the front of the engine and it seems pretty clear its coming from the rear....or the lifters i should say...
i'll look into taking off the belt tho..if its easy i may just pull it off for kicks and gigs to see if maybe it is the ac compressor... i'd love love love for it to be the AC compressor but my AC still worked great plus i had a mechanic tell me it was the lifters lol...for him to be wrong would be insane |

...to test it its your AC Compressor, cant you just turn off your AC switch so you're not engaging the clutch for the compressor? If the tick goes away - AC Compressor at fault, if not, then....there you go, its not your AC compressor.
Doesn't make sense that the compressor would tick at all times. |

Not for me.. my mechanic used a mechanics stethoscope. It is is exhaust lifter off of my number 3 cylinder. It clicks all the time whether its loud or soft. I could drive it all day and it apparently would still be there subtly he said. It is really unfortunate. The investigation is still open on my car. Since I was younger when my car was under warranty (under 21), dealerships pushed me around very easily and I wasn't old enough for a loaner car and I went to school far away from any dealership. How this situation gets handled will determine on whether or not I buy another BMW...or another German car for that matter..ever again.

I had the valve lifters replaced for the tick back in March last year. I noticed the tick was back over the holidays. Took it in yesterday and they are doing the head replacement. They told me that they keep at least one head in stock at all times, so this must be a pretty common repair. I was under warranty the first time and am under CPO this time, so I don't know if I'll have to pay the deductible, but I'm very happy with Autohaus BMW for how they have handled this. They took care of it on the first complaint each time and always provide loaners.
BMW needs to give up on the lifters and go straight to the head replacement. Only reason for them to do the lifters first, I think, is that they hope you will be out of warranty/cpo by the time you need to have the head replaced. |

what happens if u wait
I have the tick now too and since i cant get a loaner car unless i go to the place i bought it from (out of state) i have to devote a whole day to this and working m-f makes this almost impossible.
I was wondering what were to happen if i wait until my next service due in 7k miles, the original warranty is up (by date not miles) so either way its going to cost the deductible which idc i want it fixed the correct way to avoid future out of warranty problems. so if anyone has lived with it for a while or know what happens please let me know, thanks. |

Picked up my car today0- it was in the shop about 3 days. I did have to pay my CPO deductible, but I'm ok with that because the whole thing was handled without hassle. No big deal when you get a loaner. Only odd thing was that the radio was set to an AM station when I picked her up.

oddly sometimes its quiet...sometimes its louder then hell...i always make sure its full on oil and just go about my day...i'm sure it would be okay but if i had the option of getting it fixed for the deductible...i'd be all over it today.. i'll end up selling the car for the price of dirt before i fix this sadly... |
