Opinion on Tints

Hi guys,

I have a Montego Blue 335 coupe with Cream Beige interior. I was thinking about getting tints for my car. Could you help me pick the type and color(black or grey) for the tints.

I have been leaning towards

Huper Optik 35% or F1 Pinnacle 35% since I am in California.

Thanks.

I just posted this in about 10 min ago in another forum regarding a similar tint thread.

And FYI, with 35% and the lighter color interior, it's going to brighten the interior more than a car with a dark black interior. If you don't really want to see the interior, go 20%. I'd stick with black color because it's universal and doesn't stand out as much like a silver/mirror/gray tint job.

Some states don't allow you to tint the rear glass darker than 35%, where as some states like Nevada will let you drive around with limo tint all around, including the windshield. In California, it's technically illegal to tint your front side windows and your windshield (except the upper top part no lower than 4"). You can tint your rear windows as dark as your want but in order to do that you must have a passenger side rear view mirror (most people don't know this, and most cops won't get your for it but they might). For the OP and since you live in Hawaii, check your state's laws there.

Now having said that, I tinted my 328i coupe with 35% all around (except windshield) because it's a smaller car with black interior. I tinted my Audi S4 the same 35% all around and that also had black interior so it looked about the same, maybe slightly darker looking on the 328i because it's a smaller car. I've seen 25-20% all around on the 3-series and other smaller coupes/sedans and I think that's way too dark looking on those cars. With 35%, you can see a silhouette of the person(s) inside the car but you can't make out their faces. Good enough for most of us. With 15-25%, especially on the front windows, you can barely even make out if there's a person in the car or not. I think this is where most people get tickets is because the cops can't see anybody at all, no outline or anything, so it's way too dark in the front. With a larger car (like my Land Cruiser) that has a lot more interior space and a bigger windshield, 20% all around looks very similar to my 35% on the 328i in a matter of darkness and seeing a silhouette of the driver.

That's just my opinion and it doesn't mean that you won't get ticketed for using the same setup. Personally I like the clean look of the same % all around and not the typical darker in the back and lighter up front. And an FYI, tinting the windshield in CA anymore lower 70% is illegal and you can technically have your car towed & impounded for it. You can tell a difference on cars that have the winshield done at 50%, if you know what to look for. And yes, tinting the windshield 50% does make a big difference in the summer and keeping the heat out. But if your windows are any darker than 35% all around (especially up front), it's going to make the inside much darker than you think and it'll be a ticket magnet for sure (seen it on multiple cars that we've worked on and with friends who wanted to get it done).

You really don't need F1 tint. I just got carbon non-metallic tint (maybe it's the same thing?) but for $240 at XLNT tint in anaheim. No interference with CA whatsoever...blocks UV rays pretty well as my cabin temp is noticeably cooler.

I got 18% tint and I don't regret going with a lighter 35%.

I have the exact same color combination as you, MB with beige interior, but on a Sedan. I went with 30% Huber Optik and I'm very happy with it. Not too dark and not too light.

You can see the pictures in this thread here. In the "BEFORE" pictures the car does not have tints, in the "AFTER" pictures it has the 30% Huber Optik:

Whatever you decide, just remember that if you have satellite radio or CA, you should go with ceramic tints to avoid the interference metallic tints might cause.

Since I have a light interior like you (gray leather) decided to post some pics to help you out. I got F1 Pinnacle 35% all around, it's not too dark. If you prefer it darker, I would go 20%.

Thanks for all the feedback...I wanna keep the car clean and dont really care if the interior is hidden or not. This is the reason I was thinking about 35%.

I am in Northern Cali and was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to get my car tints done at?

Also, I am thinking about getting new 18 inch wheels, which one would you guys recommend ? I dont want to drop my car or get larger wheels.

Thanks!
