Funny this came up. I was watching "Grease" the other night, and the flames from the Scorpian Leader's car was badass (Balmudo was his name, at the risk of knowing too much about the movie and sounding gay)

I don't think it would look as cool in modern cars though, and definetly not in a 135 (exhaust tips on one side only).

BTW i know its kinda ricey but its my car and I want flames now..haha
Rich condition + catless = flame balls. Haven't looked at data logs to see where rich conditions exist in driving, but that's usually when it happens. Haven't seen any of that on the e9xs yet tho.

Rich simply means more fuel in the mix. "Lean" means more air.

like the previous posters already said.. running rich is the only way to pop flames.. if you are popping flames than the car is not running optimally.
Then why do all professional race cars shoot huge flames?

As long as there is a cat, no flames.
A cat is there to get rid of unburned hydrocarbons and the system is closed loop to run as lean as possible without detonation or burning the valves.

I go to ALMS, Grand Am and other races and turbo cars continually spit flames, but they have minimum mufflers (only to meet track requirements) and no cats. They most definitely are not in a bad state of tune.

Because they inject fuel into high rpm parts of the map that are in vacuum. It helps cool the cylinders.

Had two buddies with SRT4 Neons that with just catless downpipes and side exiting exhaust used to throw some fire. Which was very helpful when you wanted to get over and the guy in the next lane was being a dick. Push in the clutch, bang it off the rev limiter a few times and the guy next to you would freak out and get out of the way.

I thought it just comes from over fueling plus decat?

Mine has pre cats only (e46) and it pops after i easy off the throttle. Im sure if it had no cats and with some adjustment to the fule mixture it would prob flame.

The Anti Lag system/misfiring is used in rallying and those engines are usually rebuilt after every race thanks to that lol

I;'ve seen plenty of scoobys and evo's spit fire and i msut admit it does look cool. I was behind one scooby (impreza) which was spitting flames and popping but the pop was so damn loud it sounded like a gun shot. Pedestrians were diving for cover when he went through a built up area lol

The anti lag is only bad for the turbos, not as bad for your engine
