Thank you very much guys, I really appreciate you're advice/ guidance.

As much as I might be gullible I think I'll just block his number and not entertain him.

Don't want to sound like a big girls blouse, but those who commented here thank you.... As out of my decency I would have probably refunded him as well (get conned out)

I have to deal with issues like this everyday in my job on behalf of insurers, as m@rk said the serial number will be stamped/printed on the rear case at the bottom.

The fault he is apparently stating is to do with 1 of 3 things. Either the motherboard charging connector itself is fried from using the wrong charger, alternatively it could be the item has been dropped whilst charging which has dislodged the connector internally or as everyone else has stated that he is just trying to take you for a ride which in that case tell him to 0121 do one!!

Another vote for ignore, he'll just be after some money back so the iPads cost him less. I had a bloke buy a car from me, it was perfect, he drove it away and 2 weeks later sent a list of 'faults' and cost of repairs totalling more than he paid for the car. Basically he was trying to get some money back what he paid for the car I think. He got told to piss off and never heard from him again.

Gumtree is full of chancers.

Should get a PAYG SIM if you want to advertise a number on sites like that.

Listen to this and the other advice given on the thread. It seems that he's out to rip you off in some capacity and nothing good will ever come of you bending over backwards to try and sort this one out.Something just isn't right with the buyer.
He tried the ipad out and was happy with it at the point of (second hand) purchase.Sold as seen.
Under other circumstances, your concern is commendable. However here, just move on!

If it is just out of warranty apple might actually repair it. I'd just ignore the guy though. He bought on gumtree, that's his risk rofl.

Sale of goods act doesn't apply as it's a private sale.

Even if you were a trader, you'll find actually imposing the sale of goods act is damn near impossible.

i had massive issues on more than one occasion with car dealers. Won't go into it, as it's a very long winded, but blatent issues with both cars (different traders). Consumer Direct agreed, gave me all the guidance of what to do, what to write when, etc - which I did - yet when it came to the final crunch of everything being ignored by the traders, they ceased to offer any more advice as it'd have to go to court. At which point I gave up.

So yeah, you have 2 options in my opinion.

1) You go to his place, collect the iPad, confirm it's yours and give him his money back provided you are 100% certain there is no issue with it when you sold it.

2) You tell him to do one and stop calling you or you'll press charges for harrassment.

Well said Alan QS.

No genuine person would behave like this buyer.

OP, keep cool and just say you're sorry he has a problem, but politely inform him the goods were sold as seen and suggest he takes it to an apple shop .

it charges to 39% ... so it works fine

Tell him its an apple product, 100% charge only comes with new ones.

But seriously:

If i was him - id take it to apple, get them to test it and then send u the form that lists the error to show i was genuine.

If i were u, id tell him that he tested it, agreed it was fine and took it happily.

Maybe mention what was said above - use the genuine charger to charge it and see if it resolves the issue.
