Any downsides with auto 335i in terms of performance mods?
I am wondering if there are any downsides to owning an auto when it comes to engine modifications. Are there certain mods you can't do? Is there less potential in terms of hp/tq? Any info. is appreciated. Thanks!

If you are planning to get alot hp/tq from your turbo engine, your auto gearboxe may begin to slip, overheat and fail eventually.
don't know how much tq can the ZF gearboxes handle. |

I'm not too sure myself but I think you are fine with the auto gear box with the stock turbos with the ecu reflashes. I'm pretty sure you will need to change it out once u get some aftermarket turbos

I thought the auto can handle more hp/torque than the manual. i thought i read that somewhere. Auto's are faster anyway

The autos are good on whatever you can throw at it with the stock turbos. They tend to drop hp at high rpms and that helps to make it safer to shift with an auto.

Thanks for the info all. I am use to the world where autos are a second slower than their manual counterparts and where there are mods for manuals but limited mods for autos. Since it seems like the auto and manual are pretty close in terms of performance, I am looking at the autos again. I don't mind the manual (I have been driving one for the past 2.5 yrs), I just don't want to deal with replacing the clutch in the future.

Before this turns into another auto vs. manual thread, I will say that I have read that the manual is more capable of handling extra torque. Please don't turn this into a "which is faster" thread.

build boost at the line, shift faster; more than makes up for the power lost through the drivetrain. sorry, had to say it. |

Well it depends on how good the driver is behind the wheel on the one with manual , but anyway steptronic it aint no dct so i wouldn't really brag about it being faster.

A domestic tranny can cost you around 2k. Now multiply that times 3 because it has a roundel on it and you should come close to the price.

Auto all the way
The same performance mods apply for the 335 auto as for the manual.
Start with JB3 and you will not ask your initial question again. I am on my second auto 335. My daily drive is a manual. But if i want to race auto is the only choice for me.

If you want to compare Auto vs manual reliability you need to look at it like this
Manual Clutch replacement if it breaks Flywheel cost Potential to break rear end with slicks / abuse Potential to break / wear out synchros It is harder / more expensive to upgrade manuals and you have to factor in the strength of the diff / axles /driveshaft etc. An auto imposes a lot less stress on the diff / axles and driveshaft since it applies torque smoothly compared to a manual driven agressively. Auto Yes you can burn up an auto if you abuse it enough. If you do why replace when you can rebuild with stronger components. At this time there have been virtually no failures of the auto trans. Maybe after these cars get older there will be failures and at that point people will identify the fixes and the safe limits. Meanwhile i would suggest getting the auto oil replaced at atleast 30 - 40 m intervals even though BMW claims its a lifetime fill. You can always send the oil for analysis to show wear on the clutch packs. Highly recommended for people with higher mileages. Harry |
