Best Sports Cars for 20k or Less... Really?

Some joker on YouTube ranked the STI and E46 M3 over the E92 335. I can see the M3 being a close 2nd to the E92 as you'll spend 20k putting a turbo on that car alone.. Even the EVO was ranked lower than the STI. Right...

I'm like'n the wide body kit on the E92...

Can't go wrong with any of those selections honestly. Just comes down to personal preference. No need to get overly defensive!

And being in a lesser e90, I believe I'd rather upgrade to an e46 M3 than a 335i.

I agree about the e46 M3. It's a bucket list car for my collection, but an STI... Don't get me wrong, the STI can be a fun car, but it will never out rank an N54 335. With less than 10k in upgrades I can put down 600 whp on a daily driver.
But I guess if you don't own a modified N54 you might not understand. BTW, not defensive, just opinion.

I guess it really depends what your judging... Honestly, the 335i takes the hat for most, but some are definitely biased.

I had an E46 M3, and they aren't very fast even with some mods, good track car though. My brother had an Sti and piston ring failure every few months makes me never like them again. Evo, plan to have a built motor if making over 500-550whp..

E46 m3 on nitrous was fun, ran 11.7 on a 100 shot/bolt ons..

some of the pricing on the cars are way off... you cannot get a 2009 335i for under 17k or the m3 for under 12k

It sounds to me like you are basing your list on power capability alone. The STi is a MUCH better car then the EVO overall for sure IMO.
Since I do not track my car, I have always wondered how the E92 compares to cars like the STi and EVO in cornering. Not just stock, but with mods.
Having owned an STi, S2000, E92, and FD I can say that my initial feeling is that the E92 is not as balanced of a car. Again, I do not track my cars but I have had coilover setups on all of these cars mentioned.

Evo's are built better and better overall cars than sti's. 335's just have a bad rap because of expensive maintenance and cost of ownership numbers but the 50/50 weight distribution makes 3 series cars very enjoyable.

pricing is all jacked up on there. Most of those can't be had for 20k or less unless they have 100,000 miles, specifically the z06, m3 and such.

The E46 M3 is a better car for the fact that suspension, motor tuning, and styling was definitely a key factor in the e46. Also the motor on the E46 M3 was ranked best motor for 3 years straight. I personally owned an e46 ZHP not comparable to an M3 but by far one of the best cars I have ever owned. As an owner of a 335i I wish more attention to the suspension was had at BMW since its a sport edition you would think some of the M suspension would have been used. I wouldn't trade my 335i for an M3 since I have put so much into this ride but I would definitely think of an M3 as a second driver.

Dont get so butt-hurt. STI and M3 are world above the 335i in terms of handling and drivers experience.

To me, the 335 is dull and lacks in drivers involvement compared to the STI and M3. only thing 335i has going for it is...nothing(stock for stock).

The video doesn't give year or mileage figures for any of the cars, which makes it hard to compare the pricing.

I have been car shopping recently to replace my MR2 w/something new. Test drove a standard 2000 C5 for under $20k w/less than 70k miles, but the 350HP engined seemed too slow and the handling was too heavy/sluggish for me. I would probably like 405hp model in the clip better but I don't think a Vette is for me.

I'm now looking at 1999 Porsche 911 (996) models for under $20k w/less than 80k miles. Test drove a very nice coupe the other day but I want a cabriolet. There are a couple 996 rag tops available locally for that price and am going to check them out too.

your comparison of STI & 335i is somewhat true....in fact I was looking at STI's too when I was shopping for a new car a year ago. Ended up with my e92. but yeaa man sti is a good car but definitely for a different crowd. STI's interior is butt ugly, my old honda fit had better interior. And the big spoiler and just the image of the car....personally i think it's great for highschool or college kids, but not for a professional adult.

Just a little... But honestly... I would take them all and be extremely happy. I have owned most of the cars on the list and I find it hard to believe that anyone would put an STI above a 335. Not even in the same league. But you have to remember I'm looking at this from a tuning standpoint and not a stock vs stock. I tuned a FBO 335is last week that pulled an 11.7 on the first pass and we aren't even close to maxing out the car. So, yes... a little...

I take my E92 Sport 335i to PIR and track it once in awhile... The best upgrade I did for my car was an LSD as now I can get back into the power quicker after I hit the apex. The car also feels a lot more planted as it doesn't torque steer like the open diff did with the power level I'm at... I think the open diff makes the car feel very disconnected. So the LSD alone changed the driving dynamics of the car 100%.

I think if I would have done a comparison prior to owning a FBO tuned 335, I wouldn't rank the 335 as high. So I understand the comments from those who haven't... I currently make 480 whp and 530 wtq on stock turbos. I'm talking with Rob Beck to get a set of TD04's which will make 600+ whp on a daily driver which is amazing considering... But again, it's all opinion.

If you make it to Portland, look me up.

solid list for the most part, I don't have a LSD on my car, but I will have to agree that you do feel disconnected from the car. without one. One of my close friends has a S2000 and minus the lack of power that car has always felt very balanced to me. Probably one of the few cars I'd be willing to throw some money into
