Controversial subject.
"Follow the manual" vs. "drive it like you stole it". Most follow the manual. Do a search and you'll find many threads. |

On a side note, this weekend I will finally complete my 2000 km break-in period. I figured the engineers working at BMW don't write 2000 km break-in period just because they need to practice their German/English. They did it because it is what's best for the car.
Sure it's a painful process but in the time it took me to drive 2000 km with only one highway trip, resisting not to make the Civic with the park bench and coffee can as "spoilers" and "exhaust" look pathetic (ok, I only did it ONCE and I made sure to limit my RPM's are well under 4000), I've really learned to immerse myself in the experience of driving a fine-tuned vehicle as is the BMW 335. There are other advantages of going for the break-in. Enjoying the car is one of them. ...and I'm going to enjoy next week. VROOM VROOM!!! |

Best things to do in my opinion is follow what the manual says.
HOWEVER. If you are even asking this, then I guarantee after the first day or so, you wont be able to resist and you will thrash the balls of it....if only for a few seconds...

this might sound really stupid, i've heard it somewhere but i heard that you can break in you car by driving really like iono how to say it i guess like aggressive as long as you don't keep it at redline something about the aggressiveness smooths out the pipes or something i have no idea. i'll ask my friend tommorow and see what he said

engine is "broken in" before it arrives to your dealership. break-in period is bullshit.

For the first 1200 miles, I'd break into my car every morning. Now that I'm past 1200, I can just use the key.

If you have ever seen how the BMW factory builds a car and an engine, you might think differently. The car is run on a machine, but not long enough to COMPLETELY seat the piston rings or have the bearings WEAR in. Done properly it can take 50-200 miles to get the piston rings to seat COMPLETELY. Longer with engines withn Alusil cylinder walls.

I red lined my cars as well from day one but starting under under light load and building it up, eg redline it in the lower gears, then downhill in top gear (if you can) etc. Most important to me though is avoiding 1200mls with zillions of cold starts. That's killing it. So far on each new car we've taken it for a weekend out, doing 600-800 mls in two days, choosing the fun roads (that would not be a highway...). Good fun, pushing it, hotel somewhere, good other stuff, and i consider the car to be well broken in after that with basically 3 cold starts (the first one at the dealer.) |
