Manual shifting tips...

Trying to properly shift in both nfs shift and rfactor. I have a g25 wheel. Heres my main question.

When coming up to a turn, what is the proper downshift order? Brake to lower speed, then clutch and switch gears and then gas? Or do I hold the clutch down while braking then switch gears or what?

Thanks.

Heel-toe - meaning, brake while downshifting. then you can be in the correct gear on exit.

cause your using your heel and toe of the right foot when downshifting as the left is on the clutch. brake and gas with same foot you have to use your heel and toe

So while im braking, I should switch gears at the same time, then release the clutch and hit the gas?

Have no idea how well it would work in a video game, but . . .

All that looks great but is too complicated for me on the first day. Id rather take baby steps first.

I start braking a few seconds before the turn to slow my speed. What should I be doing with the clutch during that few seconds of braking? Then I go into the turn, switching gears, and come out of the turn in a lower gear and slam the gas. Is that correct?

It's a actually not hard if you practice. Clutch in, push the brake pedal with the balls of your feet (or toe if the pedals are far apart) and prod the gas pedal with your heel to bring the revs up when you let the clutch out.

Another way is to put the left half of your foot on the brake and the right on the gas.

So the point is to slow the car down, and at the same time raise the rpms, so when you let the clutch out the rpms are higher which gives better speed out of the turn?

DCT - Brake as hard as you can before the turn, downshift and then turn.

6MT - Heel Toe downshift under hard braking before the turn.

you wanna blip the throttle so the revs match when you let the clutch out on your downshift. When they match you get a much smoother shift and the car doesn't buck. Mind you, I've only done this in a real car, not with a video game, but I imagine its the same.

BTW, have you ever done this in a real car? I would think trying to learn on a video game is pretty tough because you dont' get a "feel" for anything.

Ive driven a manual but not in any type of race. Never had to heel and toe or anything so a videogame is my only experience with manual performance driving.

It matches the revs so your wheels don't lock up. Wheel speed needs to match gearing speed. If you go from 4th to 2nd and don't blip the throttle on a high powered RWD car, chances are you're going to slide.

The only tough part is figuring out much throttle you need to give on a blip, but it's not really bad to overcompensate with the throttle.

And in real life it's just a matter of matching when you let the clutch out before the revs drop. In a car with a N/A engine that has a high compression ratio, it's actually kind of difficult until you get used to the car. The RPMs drop instantly. I had trouble with the Audi S5 on a test drive when I was testing out hard braking and throttle blipping for the hell of it.

generally speaking, for any type of racing, it is better to be in gear before the turn, so you can accelerate through. That's how I get the best times

I think im getting better. Its just a timing issue. Not knowing how to time the gear change and the shift with the braking.

This vid might help. Obviously the kid has practiced, but he's pretty good. The game is GT5 but the concepts are the same. Shows you clearly how and when to shift.

Also, I want that cockpit. Bad.
