Hi all,

I am new to this forum and its fabulous!

I would like to get some opinions on the Performance Intake.

FYI I drive a 2007 328XI coupe 6MT with performance exhaust installed.

Currently my dealer in Toronto is offering to sell and install the performance intake for a total of C$1190 (US$1250) including tax.

He showed me he has already discounted for me. I know I can buy it much cheaper as part alone from various sources but I have no time to do it myself.

I could wait for later in case a promo comes along as I am in no hurry.

What do you guys think of the price especially its from a dealer?

um.... sounds like a rip off to me. but i don't know what intake and how much they usually cost. just saying that cause paying over $1k for intake sounds ridiculous to me. intake is also super easy to install. and (not sure about canada) usually dealerships don't even care about intake; it's a very minor mod.

i would buy myself and install myself or from a 3rd party. or at least get a price quote that way and beat up bmw with it.

hope you're just getting intake for the sound, cause it's not going to change performance much.

what kinda intake you buying? gruppe m?

i'd perfer to pay something like less than $500 otd, but that's depending on intake. and 3 hours is WAY WAY WAY too long. should take under 1 hour. under 30 mins even. you shouldn't pay more than 100 to install; i'd feel ripped off paying more than 40 or 50 for the install. shop around a bit, i'm sure you'll find some good deals. i think you should pay something like 200-400 for intake. but then agian, i don't know what you're looking for. if this was my endeavor, i'd probably end up spending something like 300 total; but i'd probably be going cheaper than you. prices i'm talking about are of course not through dealership.

If you are referring to the BMW Perf. Intake, it retails for around $850 US so you are paying almost $400 US for install. Sounds like a rip off to me.

glad to have a price. for 850, they should just install for free. the salesman probably took more time explaining the intake to you than it will take mechanics time to install.

op unless you really want bmw perf parts, i would just get another aftermarket brand. you'll get way more for your money. but i know some of you guys really have a stiffy for bmw/m brand stuff.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it is the BMW Performance Intake that the dealer is selling and installing for me.

The dealer quoted me that the part alone sells for C$1200 (US$1260) + 13% tax, but he is offering me to at C$1050 installed + 13% tax. That's why the price difference got my attention.

Given the replies, I am thinking to go for an upgrade on air filter only. I understand that the BMW Performance Intake uses a K&N filter with same dimension of the OEM filter and has an extra intake from under the windshield.

I have read different brands of filters work well like aFe, BME(?)... etc.

Would anyone be able recommend one that works well?

I have the same car. Go with the BMW EURO intake for less than $400 and you can install it yourself. Great performance.

If we are talking about the BMW Performance Intake it will look nice but you will not hear any difference as it is still a closed intake. When I had mine it was super clean but at $800+ dollars it was not worth the price. Half that is much more reasonable and installation is a breeze so DIY.

The performance intake is a nice upgrade for your car. Intakes are WAY easy to install and takes about 20-30 mins for the average person to put in. Just print up and follow one of the DIY's on the forum. Good luck!

Not worth it imo. If you can get it for like $600 and install it yourself, then MAYBE. Otherwise just do a Charcoal Delete + a performance filter or a Euro box for $400.

For that price you should get an exhaust instead. I would not buy performance intake. It sells at $725 in US but even at that price I would not do it. Do euro intake box and K&N filter you will like the results for half the price.

It's a BMW performance intake for US market.

The guy who sold it to me, couldnt fit it into his Euro 320i. & I couldnt fit it into my Euro 325i, so I've returned it to him. So the intake is 99% new.

big rip off. and if you have the time to drive to a dealer, be without your car and/or wait for it to be installed.... then you have time to install it yourself.

It is the most simple mid to do on the car period (minus a strut bar or rear fog light switch).

Dont waste your money getting the dealer to install it. also, its not really worth buying at all. It maybe gives you a few horses....but at 750 bucks give or take... is that worth it? No.

Taking all things into considerations, I have decided to just go for a drop-in high airflow air intake instead.

What do you all think? Is there another brand I should go for instead?

Initially I was thinking of going with K&N but after much research it appears that quite a lot of people have negative feedback with it. I am still open minded to K&N though.

I understand that there are a lot of mods that include changing the air box but at the moment I have decided to go for just the drop-in filter for now.

they are literally the same thing. afe may have like 1-2% better flow increase.

go with the K&N and call it a day. you will save some money.

+1 to both. If I had ~ $800 to spend on a performance mod, I'd save a bit more money and get the BMW performance exhaust before getting the performance intake. And if after that I still have more money to burn, I'd rather get the stock Euro intake before the performance intake. Amongst the 3 options listed, the North American performance intake has got the highest $$ to performance gain ratio.
