Another Cautionary Tale (Street Racing Gone Bad)

From Palm Beach Post

Broward man traveling 156 mph on I-95 crashes; leaves passenger paralyzed

A Broward County man who may have been traveling more than 150 mph on Interstate 95 is facing charges after he crashed in Boca Raton, leaving a passenger paralyzed from the waist down and forcing amputation of the man’s right foot, according to an arrest report. Felix Edgardo Soto Merced, of Plantation, is facing charges of reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury and culpable negligence and was released from the Palm Beach County Jail on Thursday after posting a $4,500 bond.

The crash took place May 22 near the southbound entrance ramps to I-95 at Congress Avenue and occurred after Soto Merced attended an event that evening at the Palm Beach International Raceway called “Street Racing Made Safe.”

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper completing a separate traffic stop clocked Soto Merced’s 2015 Dodge Challenger SuperBee traveling 156 mph while racing a BMW, the report said.

The trooper pursued the Dodge and saw it exit at Congress Avenue. The report indicates the Dodge flew over a barrier wall at the end of the exit ramp and crashed. Soto Merced, who sustained minor injuries, spoke to Boca Raton police at the scene and said he had been “racing with the BMW and was going fast,” the report said.

The passenger, Soto Merced’s co-worker, sustained multiple injuries and will not regain use of his legs, doctors told police. The man sustained an open right ankle fracture that led to his right foot being amputated just above the ankle, the report said. Police say there is no indication Soto Merced was impaired when the crash took place. Soto Merced, 29, turned himself in Wednesday to Boca Raton police.

Thank god that clown driving the challenger did not kill anyone. Sucks for the passenger in the challenger. This is why you don't let reckless drivers play with your life while you ride shot gun. Leave that shit for the track! Especially since that boat of car is not exactly agile.

Yikes, that's scary stuff.

So this guy saw the cop while racing, tried to get off the highway quickly to evade arrest, and carried way too much speed and flew over the barrier.

It's amazing no one was killed, but really unfortunate that a passenger was the one who will have this disability for the driver's stupid decision.

Keep the racing off of the streets. Last thing you want to do is wind up in jail for killing someone because you were driving like a jackass. Take it to the race track.

Probably arrested for wreckless driving on the spot, released on bail and then they decided to charge him with culpable negligence later when his passenger injuries were fully known and the prosecutor decided they had enough to charge him. Same thing happens with DUI when someone gets killed. More serious charges can be added once an investigation is complete in any criminal case.

Wait, how did he turn himself into police? He crashed his car, obviously ambulance, etc were at the scene, why didn't they just arrest him or ticket him then...?
