Hi

There have been a couple of discussion threads about the vexed question of taking out the Extended Warranty offered by BMW via Alliance and after having read them I am no further ahead on knowing what to do. My BMW new car warranty runs out mid-December 2013, so I need to make a decision prior to then. It appears they offer 12, 24 or 36 month options, all with stupid pricing. I have been quoted the following out of the box:

12 mth - $3,709 ($309/mth)
24 mth - $4,697 ($196/mth)
36 mth - $5,773 ($160/mth)

I assume they would knock the price down about 5% to 10% over the phone but that is still far too much. Has anyone had experience with the Extended Warranty to suggest it is worth taking out and what prices have you been able to secure? I do not want to pay more than I have to and any insights into what you secured it for would be helpful. I have read some bad stories about Alliance with this Warranty but I assume there may be some good ones out there too.

Appreciate any help you could give as this is a big and expensive decision…

I would say extended warranty is worth it ! I had a waterpump died on me last week and I had extended warranty on the car. Thankfully it was covered under the warranty, if i didnt have the warranty the replacement for a new waterpump is around $2200 including thermostat and labour.

The replacement cost above for waterpump is through the dealership. Having a workshop doing will be much cheaper, i know the waterpumps are about $4-500 out of the US. Then labour on top

IMO it is only a peace of mind if u are planning to have your vehicle service through a dealership after your warranty had expired and while in the event that a possible of major items like waterpump & hpfp failing. Otherwise I don't really see a point of buying. Finding a reputable mechanic (which knows their stuff) replacing it for u will probably cost much less what u paid at dealership anyways.

I agree, source the parts yourself or just through BMR and get them installed at your local bmw indy

That's bloody expensive. I just paid $2400 for 12 months on a 997.2 Carrera S and thought that was a ripoff !

Well it's always at the back of my mind but if i had a good price offered then i'll sell otherwise i wont. No point competing in prices with others hence why I have high price.

lol hell no but then again you had lotsa mods on yours and people just think they can low ball you coz it's 06 right?!! I would take $50k for mine. Any takers??

I'm thinking of honda cbr500 or the suzuki gs500. But I'm worried that it will be abit too big for me or the other way to look at it is getting a vtr250 and just use that for a year or so then sell it and upgrade if i decided biking is for me.

What would you recommend? sorry for OT

I learnt on a gs500f and its a 'fast' learner legal bike when you're first starting out.

The VTR 250 would be my reccomondation to you, great bulletproof bikes, good handling a rorty little sounding engine and more suited to the shorter blokes.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty. Especially at $309 a month! That's a lot to go wrong with a car and only IF something goes wrong.

$3709 for a year! Even if your water pump, HPFP, valve cover gasket and (insert common failure here) were all to go in 12 months, you would still have over 1k left in your pocket by paying for it yourself. Get parts overseas or from our vendors and get an inde to install.

If it's piece of mind you're after, open a new bank account and deposit what you'd spend on warranty into that account. If you don't need it: WIN!

If you only have access to a dealer, then Warranty is a no brainer.

There is one thing to remember, This company is on the ball with the servicing requirements if you miss a service or the paper work does not align with the invoice date etc you have no more warranty its all over.

You need to check your service intervals as they are a lot different from the BMW service system no more 20,000km services

In some cases its like getting blood out of a stone, check the fine print

OK so what can go wrong that is covered
1- HPFP covered
2- coils not covered
3- spark plugs not covered
4- battery not covered
5- clutch maybe but not usually
6- lights etc not covered
7- water pump covered
8- alternator covered
9- thermostat not covered
10- fan belt not covered
11- radiator covered
12- diff covered, but don't break
13- gearbox/auto/DCT covered but usually OK
14- brakes/rotors/hoses not covered
15- ABS covered
16- oil leaks gaskets etc unless something is broken its not covered

Remember this is NOT,NOT,NOT a BMW warranty, its a warranty system that is offered by an outside profit making company to someone buying a used car of any make, BMW market it as there own but its NOT. This is not the same extended warranty that PORSCHE offer there system is by PORSCHE same as a new car.

So have a look and see what you think you may need over the term of the policy, then you decide if you think its worthwhile or not.

I recon its a crock of Sh#t and a rip off.

Good info Pete. I bought an extended warranty when I bought my car second hand and I'm very paranoid they'll somehow consider it void due to some technicality!

Can you please outline what the process is in reality for making an extended warranty claim? My understanding is that 1. Something goes wrong with your car 2. You take it to a shop to get it diagnosed (at your own cost?) 3. Get a quote on repairs 4. Lodge a claim with the warranty provided 5. Once/if it is approved, then get repairs done.

My question stemming from this is how would the warranty provider know if your car has been modified? For instance, if I took my car into Jin or Andrew to get it diagnosed and got a quote for the claim etc. etc., how would the warranty company know anything about my car unless the mechanics advise them?

OK lets say that you car comes to us on a tilt tray with a fault, It just stoped and won't restart.

1-We would have a quick look around the car 30 minutes or so
2- ring the warranty company with a description of the fault and an approximate cost to repair, then fax them a costing.
3- the warranty guy will ask about the service book and how many kms on the speedo, he may quiz me about the car then will give me a claim number providing he is happy with the service book paperwork.
4- when the job is completed we will send the invoice to the warranty company for payment, sometimes there is a top up payment to be paid by the customer.
5- if the failure was caused by a performance part or has broken due to modified performance its on you. We won't bullshut the warranty company
6- If the broken part has nothing to do with the performance upgrades its all good and I will help to get your claim past the assessor.

But be warned the paperwork is very important so do not miss a service
