Would love to hear from others?
If you had carbon build up in the intake ports
What symptoms did you have?

I know about how to clean it via walnut blasting.

I mainly would like to know from others what issues you had.
Not sure if this only applies to n54s only.

Thx in advance

If this is the posting you're talking about then I don't think it answers OP's question: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=770612

He/she seems to want people to describe what symptoms they were having before the cleaning but the most everyone on that thread seems to be say is that the idle is better without much description on what was going on before.

if you 'push' your engine (i.e. WOT, or to Redline), it will misfire, stutter, and engine light will come on.

drive like a granny and your engine may not know it needs carbon cleaning.

just for clarification.... The carbon buildup issue isn't in the intake manifold. It is in the intake ports of the cylinder head. Big difference.

Black hawk, you are correct.

My symptoms were a slight stumble or roughness in 3rd through 6th gear when accelerating in the 3000-3500 rpm range. I assume it was there in all gears but the car accelerates so fast in 1st and 2nd that it isn't perceptible. I cleaned it with small brushes, gun cleaning patches and carb cleaner and the symptoms were immediately gone. I would say I was able to remove about 70% of the buildup. Next time it will be walnut shells.

All direct-injection engines experience some sort of buildup. If a 335 has an owner who never goes to redline, the cats and intake ports are probably caked with gunk, a sad sight indeed.

Antipathy,
So, I was going 80km/hr.
Saw a really straight long very open double lane road.

Floored it.
Everyone behind me was ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Redline was hit in normal D mode.
I have an AT.

Reached about 200+ km/hr.
I say about 230.

Then I smelled something.
It wasn't gas, oil or brakes.
Not even plastic burning smell.
Almost like a chutch burning smell.
Went away after car slowed down to steady 90 to 100km/hr.

Never smelled this before...can't discribes it.
I not a noob.

Could that be carbon burning off?

Never had a direct injection car before.

Thx again.

DarkNemesis, it was probably your cats.

Ever be driving on the highway and a car is merging in front of you? Naturally some people will push the gas pedal harder when trying to judge the speed of the car they are merging in front of...but most people rarely push their pedal that much so the car is seeing rpms much higher than usual, this causes the cats to expel a bunch of crap and buildup. Since you're driving behind them you'll instantly smell a crappy smell as they merge in front of you.

Yup, the smell can creep into your car even then.
