How do you know? Does a light come on or something?

yes, when you push the starter button, it pauses for a second and a yellow light that looks like a coil illuminates for a second. then it starts right up!

ya those glow plugs go 1000 degrees in a fraction of a second, isnt technology great?

I'm reminded of the old days where you had to put the key in the "ON" position and wait for the glowplug light to either go out or come on and then crank the motor in order to start the car. How they go from ambient temperature to 1k in 1.5 seconds is beyond me.

The 1998 Frieghtliner I was driving today had a 15 second wait this morning . I'm still amazed how quick these glow plugs can warm up.

I remember when I had '90 Jetta Diesel how I used to have to plug it in at night so I could start it.

The car had a choke to. Oh man I was lucky that we lived on a steep hill cuz some night we would forget to plug it and I would have to jump start it.

I had a block heater on my '86 Jetta diesel that made everything easy, but I did have to change out the glow plugs once in a while.
