Temp Tags...

Does anyone know if I can get them...

I'm trying to sell my car to an individual who lives out of state, and don't want to have to leave my tags on the car. Can i get a set of 30/60 day tags for them to drive their car home? I've tried calling the MVA, but all of their lines are busy!!

Anyway... if you know... feel free to pass on the knowledge

Subscribed......

The answer is probably the same, but I'm wondering the opposite. If I buy a car out of state and want to drive it home, what are my options. Other than on the sellers tags, of course.

Go to mva.com they have pretty much everything there to answer your questions. Forms you can print, etc.

You can try emailing them your question. There should be a contact email for the MVA, I had a question for WI MVA and they answered within a day.

I sold my last 2 cars to out of staters. You don't really need to talk to MVA. The buyer needs to talk to his MVA equivalent. In my case, the requirements for obtaining temporary tags for both buyers states (WV and NC) were too confusing and took too long to process. So instead, both times, the buyers drove up with the plates from their other cars, slapped them on, and drove back home. Once i collected payment and signed off on the titles, it was up to them to figure out how to get registered and get new tags. This is a fast but questionable way, but you don't take the risk of giving them your plates (which you have to turn into the MVA as soon as possible).

I think the real process in WV was that my buyer had to have a bill of sale, then he would register for a temporary tag. He would have 30 days to get the car inspected. Then they would issue him a real tag. To follow this process, I would have had to drop my car off in WV so he wouldn't have to come here and drive it home without tags or with the wrong tags. Seemed like such a long and obtrusive process for me at least, so he used tags from another car to drive home. He had his new tags within a week.

you should be able to buy a temporary tag (called trip meter). it's for reasons like this.
when I bought my 5 series i got one printed and taped it up on the back windshield to drive it home. Once, i got the title in hand, took to dmv/mva to get my regular tags.

so the car is gone? what r u gonna get now?

Nope not gone yet
Have a tentative agreement for him to pick up on the 27th... Details will be final tomorrow.
Who do you buy the trip meter from? The DMV?

whatever you do don't give away your Tags. They need to go the their MVA/DMV with the VIN and tell them they are buying a car out of state. Their MVA/DMV will issue a 30-Day temp tag. They'll also need proof of insurance for the VIN. At least that's the way it works in MD.
