I love potholes...
So I was up in LA for a meeting and driving home last night on 5th and Figueroa (downtown LA), I hit a pothole in the dark....wow...what a shutter! Luckily, alignment and balance seem fine on the 120 mile drive home, but I get home and look at my tire and below are pics of what I see.
Funny thing is, I'm not concerned about the curb rash..I know that'll happen. I'm bummed my car only has 1600 miles and even more bummed I have to dump money into Bridgestone runflats. I was planning on replacing these with non RFTs when they wore down. It's crazy...even Michelin PS2 RFTs are less expensive than Bridgestones! At least tire pressure seems ok, but I'm weary to drive on any long trips until these are replaced. Thanks for reading my rant... |

Sounds like our recent Cali rains have taken a severe toll on the roads down there as well as up here in Sac. That must have been a very sharp pothole, sounds like a job for the comprehensive insurance ...

Can you see vertical cords inside the cut?

This is like de ja vu for me. The EXACT same thing happened to me, except I only had my car for 1.5 weeks and had about 350 miles on it. The wheel rash was a lot worse than your, and my sidewall was torn just like yours. I was advised by my own personal mechanic that it would be a good idea to change the tire, since the sidewall was shot. So I spent $250 + tax on a new tire, and another $30 for labor to change the tire. What sucks even more is that my mechanic ended up scratching my wheel even more while trying to prop it out of the old tire. Anyways, I'm getting my wheel repaired this weekend by Son Tran.
I'd advise getting a new tire, as much as it's going to hurt.

Get 2 repair estimates or 1 receipt of the repair, and claim it to the city. They are responsible for maintaining the roads and should pay out for something like that. Take pictures (including pothole if possibly), date, location, and submit a claim. It'll take around a year to get paid out but you'll likely get paid out. I bent 2 Fikses going over a pothole the size of China and the state covered the cost for 2 new wheels.

Here's an update:
I went to a tire shop today and they took a quick look at it. His recommendation was that it looks cosmetic and I should just keep an eye on the pressure and get this...glue the rubber back in. If it ends up losing pressure, get a new tire, but if it doesn't, it should be fine. Weird huh? I guess I'll take my chances...if anything, I don't gamble, so maybe my luck will be good on this one (if there is such thing?) |

Yeah, a pot hole cost me 1K for four new tires.
Driving along hit a pot hole in the rain, and bubbled the front right and rear right of my E90 with performance package, so of course staggered tires cannot be rotated and must be replaced. Ugg. But they told me that personalized plates send $35 to pothole repairs or something like that, so two sets of personalized plates for me.... Hopefully, my $70 got that hole fixed. |

Doesn't look too bad. SOmething similar happened to me except with a curb ( I know, I'm a retard). My wheel rash and tire looked almost exactly like yours. I left the tire alone and had the wheel rash repeired for $125. Looks perfect now and you could never tell it was scratched.
