Hello mate! Was wondering where some of the old E90 post members went. Are the rest of the guys from a few years ago still on here or have they moved on? Hope you're still enjoying the 335i

yes, still enjoying the 335i! feeling a bit down on power, now that lots of the new hot hatches are pushing over 300bhp standard.

Lots of the older members have moved to FB and the F30 section!

Well written article and gave a real insight to the differences. I had an E46 M3 a few years back and I would choose my E92 335d that I have now over it all day long. As good as the engine was in the E46, the drive, the interior and the ride we're shocking IMO. I had the decision to make a few weeks ago to either push on with buying the 09 335d or buying an 07 M3 with similar miles on the clock, so long as I paid the extra £3k on the book prices. As my car is my commute AND I need it for work all through the day, my head ruled my heart! Maybe one day......

Thanks for the comments. I'm just in the process of writing my E90 M3 vs my new F80 M3 review. It will be posted in the F80/82 forum next week sometime. I'll include a link to it here. Here is a quick pic of the F80!

Oh wow, op this post was beautiful. I'm in your exact scenario, same cars, same length of ownership (12 months). I've considered the differences in running costs, and besides the obvious (engine, tranny, etc) the rest is mainly the same (Fluid change, break pads, etc). I would have a warranty for sure for the M3, which would cover any "surprise" issues, I can do the simple maintenance myself. The MPG difference would be 3-4 miles compared to my 335i as I currently get about 20.8 MPG, so I have no issue with filling this baby up. Can't wait to get the ball rolling on this, hope your M3 is still running strong!

This, also how was your experience with the e90 m3 before you sold it? Any issues that needed fixing or a work around a you had to come up with? I'm trying to get as good of an idea as possible as to what it will be like owning this beast of a vehicle.

Been meaning to write a comparo review with E90 and F80 for a while now but have been busy, will definately be writing one though.

As for the E90 M3 - I owned 2 of them and never had a single issue with either. Mine were both new though so can't speak for used higher mileage examples but they seem to be pretty bulletproof. Head over to E90 M3 post and have a read on the forums. Great cars, I'm sure you will absolutely love it!

Looking forward to your review mate!

Have you driven a C63 AMG coupe? Would be great if I could get your thoughts on that car....

Yea I went over there and read all sorts of good things on the e90 m3. Engine is bulletproof and will last for sure. As for used they say watch for break in at 1k for the service to replace fluids for the factory. Other than that nothing too bad and I looked at a couple DIY guides for basics maintenance, nothing too crazy pretty straight forward. I'm looking forward to owning an m3!! It'll be a fun experience.

This is definitely the most well written and concise write up I've seen comparing these two cars. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, this helps out a lot in my decision for my next car

Should I upgrade to an M3?

Again, thanks for taking the time on that write-up. I have been driving my '08 335i 6MT sport package for almost 3 years, and I've been gearing up to upgrade to an M3 from about the same year for about $10k. Been wanting the M since the 2008 sedan came out!

But after test driving the first one, I'm suddenly rattled. It felt slower than my 335! Everything you described about the throttle responses on both cars agrees with my experience. I thought maybe I'd hyped it up in my head too much and that's why it felt slow, but then I jumped right back in my 335 and pulled out of the parking lot and confirmed, it felt noticeably faster.

Now I know that the M3 is actually faster, I just did a whole lot of number crunching in excel with dyno test data and gear ratios and tire radii and confirmed that they pull equally hard for the first half of each gear, then the 335 starts to fade while the M3 doesn't at all. So the M3 by the numbers pulls equally hard to start and then HARDER as you get closer to needing to shift (turns out redlines happen at exactly the same mph in both cars because the final drive ratio compensates for the higher redline in the M)

But they didn't feel to me like they pulled equally hard. The 335 felt like it pulled harder.

So I'm going to try to test drive another one and see if there was maybe something wrong with that one. (I pushed all the right buttons I think, "power" button on, DSC off, EDC set to max) Or maybe a second drive I'll be able to get a better feel.

I admittedly didn't get to push the handling much, another problem with that car is it felt like it had plastic tires. The wheels slipped so easily I felt like I had no traction and had no confidence at all trying to pull high g's in any turns. I spent half of each of my acceleration runs managing wheel spin.

Since I don't race or anything, the only thing that really matters is how fast the car FEELS, so I don't know what to do. Everyone always says the M3 is a better driver's experience. I'll give another one a shot and see what happens. Any other tips for my test drives would be extremely welcome!

Anyone who's interested I plotted the power curves in all 6 gears for 3 cars, '08 335i, '08 e 90 M3, and '02 e46 M3 based on whp from actual test data. I used gearbox ratios, final drive ratios, and original equipment tire revolutions per mile to calculate them. Pretty interesting stuff.
