E46 engine bay question

A friend of mine just picked up an '04 M3 and we were looking at it and noticed that on the passenger side of the engine compartment is this huge empty space! It's right between the strut tower and firewall. We have no idea why there is this huge empty space. Any previous e46 owners have the same thing? Missing cover? We come to the conclusion his model only has the premium package and smg transmission options.

Anyway it was my first experience driving an M3. It was pretty awesome, my favorite e46 m3 color leguna seca blue
I'm definitely getting one in the same color sometime in the future!
As nice as it was and it was kept in really good care; it just cannot compare to my d w/jbd

The first year model E46's had the DSC unit in that hole then they relocated it. So it is now just a hole for storage.

Tell your friend to get a supercharger on that beast and then he can be on your JBD level.

Correct, 2003.5-2006 models had the DCS/ABS module removed from that location. No engine cover is supposed to be there, just an empty space. It is a perfect size to hold a bottle of WW fluid =)

Yeah it's a pretty decent storage location. I suggested to my friend I'd keep some microfiber towels, quick detailer spray, and a quart of oil in that spot.

Right hand drive models, yes. Left hand drive models, not standard. But you can install the cover from RHD models.
