£2K on the price list doesn't translate to an extra £2K residual. Get real.

certainly the dealer will not take those options into account but either way if you had it they will tell you these options don't worth money, if you don't have they will say you r car is poor man spec so either way you will get rape. However when you are selling privately it is a different story, when i was looking for my car, the difference can be upto 2-3k for similar cars with and without those options

I will at the end of the day choose a built in nav for reasons

*downloading and cracking a nav software on a phone is a nightmare unless you use iphone and buy in app store

* waiting for phone to find GPS ( sometimes it take ages)

* signals are generally better in a build in sat nav

*using nav on phone will kill its battery

*Leave suction marks all the bloody time and its hard to clean it off every time

*Bloody thing ( be it a phone or tomtom) keep falling off /Cables are a mess and you also need to take it off and store everything away everytime

* have to stop in a safe place to change anything as the touch screen is horrible to use when driving (also dangerous)

*Idrive system lets you have on screen info not just a sat nav.

* people wont think its a pooor mans spec car!

I think i just had a really bad experience with portable satnav systems...

Hmmmm, let's see

Why factory fitted Sat Nav?

Because of its integration with the ICE (you don't have to turn down the music to hear the sat nav)
Because of its large easily readable screen
Because its integrated into the driving position and dashboard illumination
Because it improves the look of your car's interior and dashboard
Because a big sucker and tom-tom or smartphone hanging off the windscreen looks cheap and tacky
Because it also contains a hard drive for music and BMW connect for downloading maps and information
Because it relieves driving stress and makes finding places far easier
Because it rarely loses the satellite signal unlike a smartphone
Because of its integration with your smart phone
Because it can be integrated with Voice Command, making operation while driving much easier and less distracting
Because it can have split screen real time map with large scale (lot's of detail) as well as arrow directions to help navigate tricky motorway interchanges, town centres etc.
Because it integrates traffic information to avoid jams
Because of its emergency situation functionality (calling emergency services with car's position)
Because the large screen coming with the SatNav is used for a host of other apps, including Internet, Smart Phone Integration, OBC etc
Because a used BMW w/o Satnav is a hard sell and dealers will suck their teeth and make lowball trade-in offers, or create more negative equity when settling finance
Because if financed, it doesn't cost £2000, it costs £35 times the number of months you keep the car
Because if not financed it doesn't cost £2000.....it costs £2000 minus whatever the residual percentage
Because a modern dashboard w/o SatNav screams 'underspec'd', regardless of the other options fitted
Because you can't forget it or leave it somewhere
Because you won't get a ticket for operating your car whilst driving

OP.. It seems with the way you are responding that you have already made up your mind. If you want to use your phone then do so. It seems every time someone has given you a reason as to why an in built satnav is beneficial, you refer back to your phone - which is fair enough. If you prefer your phone and you are happy to use your phone, this thread can be closed, right?!

Why do you need sat nav when you can you simple use maps on google? I using my sat nav only when I going abroad. I don't have Idrive in my car because I like driving o not plying with a Idrive. Night time is useless. My Tom Tom I can fit in ashtray and is not disturbing me. I can change music on my steering wheel. I still don'd getting why for some one need idrive

Idrive isn't just for playing with, the playing with it bit wears off after you've had the car for a while, idrive helps people who like driving have a better driving experience.

Don't knock it til you've tried it

Didn't bother me that my E90 didn't have it, I liked the car so much that I didn't think about not having i drive, Until I had a 320d loan car for three days that had i drive, then my opinion changed drastically I loved all the things you could do on it, I found myself going out just to use the Sat Nav on it , so when the time comes to trade the car in, for me i drive will be well up the top off the must have list

Nobody really cares what engine you have in you're car, you asked for opinions and you got them.

Hope you choose wisely come order time

Personally I wouldn't have a BMW without iDrive, and it's one of the features that continues to make BMW the most compelling choice for my next car. Certainly moving to a brand that doesn't have an all-in-one controller would be tough for me.

What would be interesting to know is whether anyone who actually has iDrive would opt not to have it again, as they simply don't use it and choose to use their phone instead - anyone out there?

From my point of view, the nav is a very small part of what iDrive brings and the temptation to use my phone instead just does not even register.
