are tuning boxes detectable

bought a tunit for the 335d just wanted to raise the output in line with the updated engine ie 313 and 465, went for the tunit as it can be altered to almost exactly those figures. I was going to wait until it had its first service which I paid for on the 3 or 5 year service plan, I drive says it needs servicing in 3700 miles but bmw say they wont do it until 1000 miles before the 3700 is up. so do I wait another 3 months to fit the box, id like to do it now but don't really want the hassle of removing it when the car is serviced or should I risk and leave it on. the o on the box apparently makes no difference to the standard power.

Yes, BMW would be able to detect it if you fitted it before the service and left it fitted at service time. They wouldn't though if you removed it before the service....

Sorry, my ignorance. When was 335D engine update to 313BHP (year and month)?

It was updated for the F3X. E9X was always 286BHP....

In addition the F3X now uses the N57 engine for the 335d where as the E9X used the old M57 engine...

Cheers guys. I was getting tempted to buy 335D, done some research and max was 286BHP. It amazed me how come 313 is gained on E-series.

What is best BHP and torque you get out of 335D with tuning box/ remapping and without altering any other things (such as removal of DPF etc etc)?

Tuning boxes are not so good

If you want something switchable try a superchips remap (bluefin)

DMS quote 355bhp from a 335d remap ... Evolve quote 350bhp. I generally think you will get at least 340bhp from a remap.

The likes of DMS, E-Maps, Evolve, BW Chiptune and Superchips all seem to give good results.

As for tuning boxes - no idea tbh.

DMS quote 355bhp from a 335d remap ... I generally think 340bhp is a normal result from a remap.

Cheers mate.
Only few diesel cars come with that sort of potential.

I believe hotcoupe had 363 from his remap and quite a few remaps/boxes quote that kind of figure. I think it is the 6 series which has the 313 engine and I cant imagine its much more than a tweak of the ecu to gain an extra 10%. im not after ultimate power and the tunit can be altered with 0-9 stings although comes on number 5 which gives 326bhp and 470 ft lbs. I intend going with no 3 which should equate to the 313 from the late engine. the new 550d triple turbo is something else again with 381bhp!

It's a different engine block, not just a ECU tweak....

Yes tuning boxes are detectable as I had one fitted to my 320d before my remap and it threw some pending over boost fault codes that could be seen if bmw did a diagnostic scan of the car unless you removed the box and erased the memory,

I don't know all the differences but the main one was iron block to aluminium. The old engine was used for the 335d due to being stronger but I assume they have engineered a way around this now...

See here for the older M57 engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M57

And here for the newer current N57 engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N57

DTUK CRD-T tuning box gives 340bhp and 700nm.

It controls fuelling and boost, which to my knowledge no other tuning box does.

I can't decide between the DTUK and a switchable remap.

Is the Bluefin actually a remap? Is it decent?

Yes bluefin is a complete remap

They are done by superchips which is a massive company, bluefin is massive in the ford tuning scene. I will be getting one when the funds allow

288 to 355 is a significant jump ? like on the 335i ? would you not need to modify other bits to sustain this power increase i.e intercoolers etc ?

With no extra mods, simply pluged in my DTUK CRD-T in - when rolling roaded on a dyno dynamics RR it made 340 bhp and 510 lbs/ft

Felt nice an strong on the road - returned better econ when driven appropriately too

On my E92 335d m sport 07 plate I ran it from just over 20,000 to 120,000 miles with no major brake downs or faults
The only issues I ran in to was the common boost pipe seals and toward 100,000 miles the rubber o-ring's that sit on the swirl flaps started to weep oil - removed them and replace with blanking plugs
Also removed the EGR too , once the ecu had adapted fully the car felt like it'd gain afew ponies, but the main of it was the power band - the power came on sooner and held on longer in the revs

I had the same tuning box on my other E92 335d SE 56 plate - covered 50,000 miles, again, faultless

The same box, reflashed and a new loom is currently on my Audi a6 3.0 tdi Quattro - 20,000 and counting, no faults caused by the box what so ever ......

It's fair to say that my DTUK CRD-T has paid for itself many times over - one initial outlay, one extra loom later and still going strong

Happy to answer any questions

The E9X uses the M57TU2D30 engine and the model is listed under that engines section.

The F3X uses the N57D30T1 though the engine is listed but it doesn't list the F30 under the list of model bit I can assure you that is the engine fitted.

I had a Superchips map via Bluefin on my 320d - I hated it and it came off and I got a refund.

I had one of their maps on a Golf GTI edition 30 and loved it. I think with them it depends on the car and I am loathe to go back to them after the 320d episode !

I have a DMS map now on my 330d and it is like chalk and cheese compared to the Superchips remap. Much more attention to how it interacts with the car and gearbox than the Superchips one.
