BMW Cup Holders Suck

Cup holders in E90 are flimsy, noisy (squeak/rattle with a bottle of water in them, so much so that my wife just takes the bottle water out and just lays it flat next to herself in the passenger seat, and just closes the cup holder), and definitely an after thought.
Yeah yeah yeah, germans are great, they don't drink, they are all race car drivers who only pay attention to the road, fat americans, blah blah blah.... excuse us for wanting a decent place to put our water bottle. BMW (and MB too, for the most part) sucks at cup holders. |

I buy 500 millilitre bottes of diet coke and put 'em in the drivers side cupholder.
If I give it a boot accelerating from the lights or accelerating in a turn, the coke falls over. OTOH I once went to the supermarket and bought a watermelon and put it in the trunk. On the way home I forgot I had bought the watermelon and gave the car a bit of stick around some corners. When I got home, the trunk was covered in smashed up watermelon.... |

At least he didn't ask forgiveness for drinking rather than paying exclusive attention to the driving activity....

I agree the cup holders suck. They appear to be nothing other than an afterthought in an otherwise excellent vehicle - basically no good for anything taller or bigger diameter than a can of pop or cup holder will spit out the offending object at the slightest spirited turn or take off...
But I bought the car for the important aspects that BMW concentrates on. I don't drink in the car anyway, but frequently bring home the fast food drinks, found out early on to ask for the cardboard cupholder when bringing home takeout...

The spring mechanism stopped allowing mine to come out. $37.50 for a new one. After buying it, they changed the design to add a silver tacky insignia in the middle of the face plate. To make the other one match it cost me another $7.50 Plus my time to pull them out and change them. As for the design, I dont mind it. But there are often times when I drink 2 drinks. An energy drink (redbull, monster etc) and a water. Water is SOOOO far away when its about to touch the pass mirror. I find myself just setting it on my pass seat. I rate my cup holders a 4/10 |

Mine will hold a giant cup of Dew from Taco Bell with no problem. I worried at first, but it works out well. I've repeated the test just to be sure....and because I was hungry...

Exactly what I do. I don't drink in the car, but often pick up food and drinks from fast food places. I always have to drive like a grandma on the way back to make sure I don't spill anything.

I actually think they are quite good. I prefer them over those that are in the positioned near gear shifts etc. Of course they are not large enough for a super tanker full of diet coke but they are great for a bottle of water or regular sized soda.

Seriously. Had 2 E39s. You would have had to only driven backwards to avoid spilling drinks

If you want cupholders then buy a 7-series. Don't generalize "BMW's" as they are very different from your base 1 and 3 series to other models. I drive my car however, I don't see a need to have a 64oz big gulp while doing so.

Anyone try one of the BMW Travel Mugs with the Rubber Grip? Just wondering how well they fit in the drink cup? :

My complaint is just that they are too shallow - a regular size bottle of water "tips" if you hit the gas with any more vigor than a geriatric...it stays in the cupholder and everything but it gets annoying. Very minor complaint, and wouldn't buy another car over it, but since you asked...

actually these are horrible! I bought one and while the travel mug itself is great, it only stays in the cupholder when FULL or close to it. But the time you get to the bottom of your joe it'll fly out the cupholder when you make a turn!!!!

yeah for such great engineers, they didn't apply the same "center of gravity" principles to the cupholders that make our cars so awesome!!!!

http://www.amazon.com/BMW-Genuine-St.../dp/B0016L04NA My wife is a yerba mate fiend, but the gourds they use don't fit in the holders at all. So we got one of these, I used a die grinder to open-up the sipping top to take the mate straw, and it works great. |

My biggest complaint is that regular sized water bottles rattle in the cup holders. It's the most annoying thing ever.

The cup launchers are OK.
What are they TRULY great for: Snapple bottles - fit perfectly, don't rattle, and have a cap on top. What are they AWFUL for: Starbucks, or almost any Medium or greater coffee cup - starbucks lids don't have the little flange on top so any bump will spit coffee out, and anything larger than a medium will tip with only a little bit of gas. I miss my "can cooler" that was in the center console that you could put a soda can inside and keep it cool using the AC. |
