Keep netbook and bt tool in car 24/7

So with hpfp problems a possibility, I cant just have bmw tow me to the dealership with a jb3 under the hood. So I thought that Id get a super cheap netbook and a bt tool and keep them in the car.

If anything happens, I take out of the jb3, clear the codes and get towed to the dealership. The only other thing Id have to change is the dci. Id request that the dealership doesnt work on the car that day or give me time to take some stuff out of it or something and Id run home, get the stock airbox and bring it back.

Hopefully no dealership dealing with a hpfp will give a dci a hard time anyway. Im sure lots go to the dealership with a dci.

Thoughts on this?

Netbooks can be had for less than $300. Bt tool is $270. So for around $400, you have a mobile code clearing and logging machine.

assuming you have a laptop at home, what's the point of having a netbook in the car if you're gonna go home to grab the stock airbox anyways? I'd say keep your stock intake in the car as well, if you want an ease of mind. Just hope thieves don't break into your car.

The dci wont void the warranty I assume. The jb3 and tuner codes will. If I have time ill switch the airbox, if not then too bad. The point is to hide the jb3 and tuner codes since bmw assist wont tow the car home.

Most valuable on long trips and stuff I guess.

Sounds like a good idea. I would take your stock air intake with you just in case. Then you would not have to run home if the dealer gives you a hard time.

Himmm, I spent quite a bit time trying to do the math and I could not figure out how you came up with the following:

$250 (netbbok) + $270(bt tool) = $520

$520 != $400

?????

cheaper to get a AAA or CAA membership and get a tow to your house where you can prep the car before you get it towed to a dealer

AAA takes forever to come most of the time. Not sure how they compare to BMW assist in response time. If BMW assist tows your car straight to the dealer, how do you get home? Is it confirmed they will not tow your car home? I want to chip my car, but i would rather stick with a JB+, and avoid tuner codes and ease of removal just in case.

bmw assist does not have a dedicated fleet of tow trucks so its response time would be the same as any other roadside assist service, aka AAA. The terms of service call for the bmw assist service to tow your car to the nearest bmw dealer, not your home.

I did not think AAA would to it to your home either. As far as I know, they have to tow it to a shop or gas station. Let me know if I am wrong.

AAA Texas:

"Towing Service When a vehicle cannot be started or safely driven, the vehicle can be towed to the independent service provider’s facility, no matter how far away, at no charge to the member. Not all independent service providers provide repairs at their facility. If you choose to have the vehicle towed to a location other than the independent service providers facility:
  • AAA Premier — Receive one (1) service call per household per membership year for a tow up to 200 driving miles (excludes RVs and motorcycles), and the remaining service calls up to 100 driving miles per member per membership year. AAA Premier towing may be subject to a delay.
  • AAA Plus — Receive four (4) service calls per member per membership year for tows up to 100 driving miles. AAA Plus towing may be subject to a delay.
  • Classic — Receive four (4) service calls per member per membership year, up to 3 driving miles for each tow.
For calls outside of Texas, AAA Premier members may need to pay for towing miles between 100 and 200 miles, and submit a request for reimbursement. Reimbursement requests must be submitted within 60 days of the tow.
A member must be present when the vehicle is delivered to a closed repair facility. Towing beyond the benefits described above is at the member's expense and may be subject to delay.
"

Check the policy for your state...

AAA is dirt cheap considering all the benefits. I keep my membership active, even with Roadside on the BMWs. Just in case I'm in another car or with friends and something happens. Can't remember exactly what I pay, but I'm pretty sure it's under $50/yr and that includes a bunch of towing miles. Plus the little extra benefits here and there make it even more worth it.
