Mini review of the 114i from the wife

"It's Sh*t. It's slow and the quality is crap."

Hope you enjoyed this insight.

You should email that to BMW, see if they put it on their site as an honest customer review!

I find the engine can play a big part in people’s overall perception of the car.
Fair enough some people don’t mind not having the poke, but people that like driving can really like a car if it has some go in it and can often excuse some of a car’s other faults. Also the brakes are generally better in a more powerful car.

I drove a 120d F20 last week and I thought it was fab. I guess it's got a fair bit more grunt than the 114i but had no complaints about quality.

I'm sure the 120d would be pretty rapid...... 114 not so.

I don't think the quality is bad either but the wife is pretty peed off with Coopers of Thames Ditton who haven't been providing very good service, so she's taken it out on the loaner!

I had a loaner 118i a few weeks ago. Doesnt sound like an exciting badge but I was surprised how well it went for "just a 1.8 engine". Then looked on the website and realised its 170bhp and 0-62 in 7.4s. And its not a 1.8, its a turbo charged 1.6.

The 114i has just 102bhp which must feel quite pedestrian.

Always get the least powerful lowest spec loan car. Makes you want to get you own car back.

Thats mad it's a proper hot hatch with such an undesirable badge on the back.

I'd have loved to have something with that kind of power when I started driving!

I started with a 65bhp peugeot so even the 114 would have been pretty special to me back then ..

So many beemers are sleepers like this though – which can be quite nice. Cars like this give a shock to your average run-of-the-mill 2.0 diesel Mondeo/Passat/Insignia etc… drivers.

Bet your 65bhp wasn't lugging round as much weight as the 114 though My first car had 55bhp and had about the same 0-60 as the Bimmer!

Anyway, the car has gone back - however, this may not be the last time it presents it's self on my drive way! My car was in to have the bumper repaired after the garage damaged it when in for a service. Well, I've got the 330 back with a fixed bumper, however it now has a scratched door
