How do you know if it is approved?

Does it have a LL-xx rating? (Long life)

yup.

I've been using this stuff for a while now on majority of my cars. 1 of the best oils out there.

Stocked up last time it was 35% off, so I still have a couple changes to go.

It's an LL-01 approved oil

Make sure to get the 0w30 which is the only German made one at CT, aka GC
Last time I priced matched this stuff at part source who had a spend $40 and get $10 back, walked out with few bags of this

Is this the same stuff in the BMW branded Castrol bottles?

Maranello has it for $6.73/L (5w30)

Not really, the BMW oil is 5w30 which is a blended oil. the GC is 0w30 which is fully synthetic. I kind of like the GC more, even use it on my lawnmower

BMW oil is a group 4 synthetic, I don't believe it is blended.

I could be wrong but some googling shows that it is not a group 4, e.g. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=265292
I thought all (or most) group 4 oils start with 0's, e.g. 0w30 and 0w40...
Either ways GC is one of the most highly rated oils in NA by enthusiast...

Hmm interesting, I did not know this, thanks.

So running the thinner (at cold temp) 0w is ok for our engines? Perhaps even better in the winter? The operating temp performance should be roughly the same as they are both Xw30's.

still debating if to switch to Mobil 1 or stick with Castrol. I will still need to go to dealer for annual oil change/ trip reset. I want Mobil 1 but i dont want to fill up different oil every oil change and dealer uses Castrol. I also got extended warrenty and dont want to lose it cause of wrong oil

Just did mine yesterday. I put in exactly 6.5L and the level indicator read 'OK'.
