So, I changed my transmission fluid today

And I couldn't believe how contaminated it appeared- and this was at the 1700 mile mark. I'm trying to follow the old school maintenance schedule, so I aimed to change it (328i 6MT) at 1200 miles- but it took me a couple of weeks to get the fluid (manned up and bought the MTF LT3 BMW stuff from Bavauto).

Easy diy. The 1700 mile old fluid came out somewhat cloudy with what I suspect is the result of break in metals- kind of a grey look to it. The new fluid of course is a nice clear amber.

My ever so slightly finnicky entry in to third gear seems better. We'll see. Couldn't hurt, I guess.

I chickened out of doing the rear diff. I have the red line 75W 90, but it looks like a pain getting the old fluid out... maybe next weekend...

It's good that you are changing the oil of the MT. I will be changing the oil of my AT soon when it reaches the 50k miles mark (yea, it's kinda late but still better than BMW's proclamation that the oil doesn't need changing).

BMW does claim their fluid is "lifetime" but they recommend a 100k flush so their not really claiming it doesn't need to be changed.

Regardless, it's BS. I'm swapping mine out soon, partial (about 3/4 probably) at about 60k. I don't think flushing the whole transmission wouldn't be good as it could dislodge some debris.

Took about two litres, with the car level. And if you have a MT and your car is still in warrantee, you should use the BMW stuff vs. something red or purple. I think the BMW fluid is good, it is just very expensive. Do it sooner rather than later! Even at 1700 miles there was a lot of crap in there and it did improve shifter feel.

50k is good. My friend who is a BMW master tech recomends replacing lifetime fill tranny fluids at 80k. I replaced the fluid in my 06 325i at 50k. Im almost reaching 100k. When I reaplace the tranny fluid again I will replace the pan with the intergrated filter as well. (Im refering to a drain and fill I got 7 liters out last time) Most dealerships in SoCal do a flush at 100k miles if it would harm the tranny why would they do it?
