Steering wheel install requires 4 wheel alignment?
Quick question,
my shop tells me that I need a 4 wheel alignment after they're done installing my new steering wheel. Is this really necessary?

Installing a steering wheel is unrelated to your car's alignment.
A steering wheel needs to be centered during alignment.

No, don't think there is anything to do with alignment. Tell them to explain why lol. Good Luck

There are small tabs on the steering wheel so the new one goes into the exact same spot as your old one so there cant possibly be any differences when putting the new one in.

well the thing is, the guy keeps insisting if I don't do alignment the wheel can end up not being in the center. I think it's complete BS.

I actually marked the wheel and the steering shaft the 1st time I replaced my wheel so that I could put it back in same place - till I noticed that the shaft is keyed... If he's worried about the wheel being on center, it's not an alignment he needs to do anyway - he needs to reset the steering angle sensor, which is something totally different. You should just replace the wheel yourself instead of paying someone that wants to rip you off, it's not rocket science

Now lads, let's not rush to judgement! Please ask your mech for a written explanation. Be sure to tell him that you'll be posting it on BMW forums in order to get a consensus view. If he doesn't write you a note, you may not get it right! Then, post his response here. Image of the note will be good. |
