Waste of money?

my annual car insurance is due once again. over a lot of years i have ticked the box to include motor legal expenses which costs about £25 but have never had the need to use them.are they a waste of money?. is there anybody out there who had a need to use them and think they are a must have,or anybody who in the past did not have them and found themselves wishing they had? in what circumstances would you find it useful to have them? thanks for your opinions.

Well if there is an accident whether your at fault or not and there is a dispute then it will come in very handy as it saves you paying the 'very' expensive legal fees. My mother had a car pull out in front of her causing quite a bad crash writing off both cars and the driver at fault decided to lie and say my mother was speeding which was then investigated and involved a lengthily legal battle between the two insurance companies regarding the case. She would have been liable for those costs if she didn't have the legal cover. For me it's a must as solicitors have been known to charge £150 + just for notifications by letter, per letter!!!

With the way people are suing for personal injuries for the slightest reason I think legal fee insurance is now a must.

Unless you have access to free legal support (and I don't mean legal aid) then I think its worth that little extra for the piece of mind.

You're quite likely to have legal protection through your household insurance (which applies to other non-house related issues) which should pick-up the tab, so it could be deemed a duplicate, but that said it's one of the few boxes I tick anyway.

As Roger says your home insurance will often pick up the tab and if you win your case you won't be liable for any fees anyway as they ought to part of the award.

A friend told me when he renewed his insurance over the phone they tried to sell him this cover. He got a bit arsey and when he looked into it he was covered anyway and this just gave an extra £50k cover. Try phoning the insurance company up and say what am I paying insurance for if your not going to pick up the court fees. Saying that I always pay it if it's not extortionate.

As has been said, your home insurance may already have this cover (many include it automatically). My car insurance people once upon tried to persuade to take it with the line "you won't get your excess back without it" (even when you are not to blame), but I resisted the blackmail.

If you are with Unison then you get free legal protection from Thompsons solicitors with LV.
