Take off!

(You really need a fast SS for this stuff. This is 1/1600 and it's too slow.)

Thanks!

I spent the past week in Poland and put the 5D3 to good use, I'll be making a thread soon.

Mark I kind of like a little wing tip blur. As long as the eye is in focus, I'm pretty happy. My kind of standby default is f8 ISO 400 at 1/1000 for sunny days, and I just aimed this out the window of my van and caught this guy taking off from a light post. Of course hawks are much larger than your typical guy at the back yard feeder.

I'm with Ed on this. Occasionally I'll try to totally stop action, but seldom is it a concern. Like Ed, I'm at ISO 400 on sunny days, ISO 800 most other times, but ready to move to ISO 1600 when needed.

Old pic, but it was due to you guys that I stalked this little fella until I snapped something worthwhile (for my own standard)

edit: dang it, I can't seem to get the uploaded file quality to match the actual file on my PC. I'll look into that.

That's pretty darn woosh.

If you're not already doing it, shoot in bursts and try to pick a head-angle where the head is toward you, even if it's only one-degree. You got a nice sharp eye, but if it were looking toward you, then this'd be over the top. Bring up Shadows, add a touch of Contrast, Crop and you're pretty well ready to roll.

I agree, I like a little wingtip blur to show the motion, but this guy moved so fast that the whole body is just a tad OOF. I think 1/2000 would have nailed it better.

EDIT: Nice chorus line, Ed! Happy New Year indeed.

^^^Now that's a pricey garage. Nice shot. Looks like selective color but isn't. Sweet.

Gee, thank you heaps Dave!
I'll set my camera to burst mode next time and will definitely have a play around with the contrast and cropping variations on the above image!

I love your work by the way! This thread is the best.

Notwithstanding Dave's excellent comments, I think the parrot shot is really cool!

And so is the NYE drinks shot, hehe!

Happy New Year guys! It's been a pleasure to see everyone's photos who contribute in this fine photography subforum. I look forward to an awesome 2014.

One of my photography related "resolutions" (it's just a goal really) for this year is to shoot more car and motorcycle races but focus on learning a good panning technique.

Here's a random shot while I was on a flight to LA recently...

Nice pics as usual guys. Very little of that booze was used last night, as I got up early today and drove down to some NWR's. It was not an awesome day for sightings, but I got a few that I think made the trip worth it, and I will post as I get them processed.
I shot this the day after Christmas here at a local park. How's this for winter? I hope the road ahead for 2014 brings all good fortune!

Can't get much higher in the tree than this. This little fellow was perched right by the entrance to the auto tour at the San Luis NWR, near Los Banos Ca.
