If you can prove that you had insurance in BC and your record has been 'clean' for a few years, they may give you a discount and not start you off as a newly insured driver. Then your rate should drop as the years pass.

Shop around, there is variation within the same umbrella company - TD insurance, for example has Meloche Monnex, Primmum and TD General, all with slightly different rates and discounts. I switched from Primmum to Meloche Monnex since it offered professional group discount. I think Belair and Intact are pretty much under the same company as well as Travelers and Dominion of Canada.

Yes, insurance is quite expensive in Ontario for many contentious factors, and it's not the same as ICBC. At least you have a choice.
