DIY: Add the OEM multimedia device pouch for iPod, iPhone and other media players

Not long ago, BMW used to include nice details such as these. Unfortunately, bean counters added their influence lately and began decontenting our cars. I believe some 2006 and 2007 models with iDrive and the aux input/USB option got this pouch piece preinstalled from the factory, but it was dropped by the 2009 model year.

I have a 2010 car with the 6FL smartphone option and keep an iPod Touch in my car as a near-permanent fixture. I like to keep my center console tidy and free to store as many accessories as possible, and this pouch helps to keep your iPhone or iPod out of the way. It also gives me a little more confidence in keeping my iPod Touch away from prying eyes and hands whenever my car is parked by valet attendants.

This is a very simply DIY but I apologize for not illustrating the installation procedure better. Fortunately, all you need is a steady hand, a good screwdriver and some patience.

Parts needed:
  • 51169148062 - Multimedia Holder ($43.50 from Tischer)
  • 07149158767 - Fillister Head Screw (quantity of 3) ($0.14/ea from Tischer)
  • 20mm torx driver

This is what the leather pouch and set of screws will look like prior to installation:

  1. Start by opening your center console lid and arrange the contents so that it will allow the pouch to fit on the underside of the lid when closed. Test the fitment of the pouch with your multimedia player. I'm using a 4th-gen iPod Touch but have found it also works with iPhones and some Android devices.

  2. Push the center console lid all the way open until it locks upright. Open the multimedia pouch so that the three interior screw holes are exposed. There is a felt-lined cover that secures over these screws once installed.

  3. Hold the pouch in place with one hand while you start one of the screws. The screws are self-tapping but requires pressure to start threading into the plastic. I don't recommend pre-drilling the holes to prevent damage to the leather top side of the cover. The screws will not penetrate to the padding or leather once installed.

  4. Push the protective felt lining piece back in place so that it covers the torx screws.

  5. Connect your device to the USB or phono cable first, then drop your device into the pouch. Secure the sides of the pouch with the velcro strap.

  6. Close the top of the pouch over the velcro strip.

  7. Close the console lid slowly, making sure the cable is clear of any pinch points.

  8. Enjoy the extra storage space! Easiest DIY ever!

How would one get any practical usage out of this? Changing songs, etc?

My 1 series came with this stock, I was kinda surprised the 3 series doesn't include it. Nice to know you can buy it after the fact though.
