Scary few seconds on DVP
Coming home from work on Tuesday night just as the rush hour traffic was opening up on The DVP past Lawrence my 335 decides to lose power while all the cars were accelerating in the fast lane. Car starts to shutter and then the engine like comes on. I quickly turned on the hazards and lane change off on eglinton to make my way slowly to Parkview. I'm so thankful thank I didn't get into an accident as I had my lil'3 year old with me.
Thoughts of failed hpfp come to mind. The crazy part is that at my recent dealer visit in august, they changed the hpfp along with all 6 injectors. In the end, after leaving the car with them for the day, they found it was a failed injector and replaced/recalibrated the timing. Question to the members. Should I be worried of any additional issues from driving to Parkview from the DVP with a misfiring engine on 5 injectors? IAds my way there under 50km, but not sure if any other issues just havnt shown up. Thanks for the help... UPDATE: Well exactly 2 weeks to the HOUR...i was driving home on the DVP and when i hit my off ramp, the yellow engine light comes on! !#$%@$#!!!! I drop by BMW Toronto, and they told me that there was going to be a 3 week wait for an appointment...basically the next opening they have is Dec 5th..so am i supposed to drive the car with the engine light for the next 3 weeks I ask the CS. She said that is probably not a good idea... Well in the end I spoke with Desmond, and he has put me on the "emergency service appointment" and now I will have to wait 48 hours before the car can make it into the shop to be hooked up for diagnostics. He is getting me a rental, but forgot to ask if it will be covered. Ah well guess I will find out tomorrow when I drop off the car. Here's hoping its a quick fix and nothing major! Glad to hear both you and your 3 year old are ok, it must have been pretty scary.
I really do not know anything with regards to any further potential issues, have had my 335 for just over 3 years without a single problem. Since your car is under warranty, perhaps having a place like BMW Toronto have another look at it with regards to issues might be a good idea.... |

@prez: maybe it's a good time to switch cars with all the incentives currently offered to E90s. if you love the 300HP, the latest engine (N55) is more reliable vs. N54.
If you can live with 230HP, the 328s have the N52, i.e. no turbo, no HPFP |

Good to hear you and your kid are safe......
Ultimate Driving Machine, my ass. This is why I passed on the 335. If this turns out to be a fuel pump issue and the fuel pump was indeed changed.....I'd get rid of the car. For safety reasons. |

Used to have a 328i coupe (2007 from new). Two years ago I bought a 335i sedan. The 328i was a great car, but the performance of the 335i engine is in a different league, especially at the low end. The OP didn't have a problem with his HPFP, it was a clogged injector. Could have just as easily happened on a 328i. Bottom line is that shit happens.

Any proof of this? (If it's true I wonder why they shoved the N54 into the 335IS, Z4, and new 1M)

There's no proof for that. With new engine design comes new problems. i.e. N55's have valvetronic issues which the N54's don't have (since it doesn't have valvetronic). It's funny how most people complaining about N54 are not actual N54 owners.

Time to move up to Porsche...wait for the baby Panamera...it won't stall on you. And it'll beat the 3/5 series for handling. It will be pricey though. Or drive a used C4 all year round. |

So I got the car back on Thursday night...
BMW Toronto had originally scanned the key fob for errors, and it complained about cold start misfires on Cyl 6 (same one that had the injector fail) and somthing about a Vanos code. The Vanos code REALLY scared me as my neighbour ended up getting rid of his M3 b/c of that. In the end BMW Toronto did the following - Replaced the Vanos Solinoid - Swapped coilpack 2 with 6 and vice versa then - Checked for any new codes or faults - None found - Performed 3 cold starts over the course of a day to check for cold start mis-fire faults - none found I wont say another word so that I dont jinx it. |
