just bought a 328i...

Hi,

I just bought a 2007 328i sedan at 134,000kms.

I was wondering what kind of maintenance I should do on it? I'm planning to change the manual transmission fluid even though the dealer told me its lifetime. Any recommendation on which fluid I should get.

I'm heading to Buffalo in a week and was wondering if I should get anything from there that I can get in cheaper. What kind of oil do you guys recommend? I know I need the LL-01 approved oil but is there any place in the states I should buy from for a discount since I'm heading over there.

Also what transmission fluid is suggested?

If you are looking to save a few bucks on discount oil I think you bought the wrong car sir!

In all honesty I would stick with the OEM oil. I have had it independently tested by Blackstone labs and they confirmed that driving 15,000 km's is more than OK. If the car is on original fluids I would swap tranny, coolant, diff fluid and brake fluid being for that many KM's.

Well if I can save a few bucks shopping in the US why not? I'm already here. I'm just asking because I don't even know the prices yet. I've bought tons of stuff from the states and have save a ton. I just don't where to get BMW parts over here. I'm pretty sure I can save a lot buying stuff like the water pump in the states.

Thanks.

Even if I don't save much I'd rather do the oil change and maintenance myself. I got all the tools I need and an air compressor now so I feel like I can tackle most jobs.

Thanks again. Yeah I've been going to the states buying car parts for years. Bought tons of auto parts from rock auto and advance auto parts and have save hundreds compared to getting the parts here in Canada.

For MT tranny I strongly recommend the Royal Purple, It made my shifts a way smother, you can buy at RMP motors, I think I paid 20 bucks p/ bottle, It just needed 2 but I bought 3 just in case

Thanks sounds like a good price. Did you happen to change your transmission fluid yet? Didn't really check the DIY so I'm not sure how difficult it is. The rear differential fluid looks simple though so I think I'll do that first.

Also where are you guys jacking up the car and putting the jack stands? I've looked around and it seem like quite a few people get the BMW jack pad adapter. Wondering if I should get that myself.

Watch out for:

- Water pump
- door lock actuators
- window motors
- starter
- steering lock

These are common issues apparently.

15,000km's! Is that what the manufacturer recommends?

Actually they say 20,000 km's, thats why I called BS and got my oil analyzed after 12,000 km (most i felt comfortable going). The reports came up good!

Hi guys, I was trying to order the manual transmission fluid and the differential fluid from the dealer but the parts guy said that he needs a stamp number on the transmission to get me the right fluid. It seemed kind of odd to me. Have anyone else experience this?
If not what type of manual tranny fluid and differential fluid do you guys use.

That's correct for the tranny fluid.

I just did my front and rear diff oil, brake flush, CDV valve.
Oil from bmw was few bucks more but i know it works.
i got transfer case oil but couldn't get to the filler cap (horrible design).
my tranny oil was changed so didn't touch that.
car has 112.000 km.

i would also do the sparkplugs

as for the tranny fluid get royal purple it is better than oem.
so you have few things to do and YES parts are so much cheaper in the US, why not save few bucks. we get shafted here in canada on the same parts basically.

from there on, mod time but keep your fluids up to date and don't believe the lifetime oil crap. you should see the oil that comes out of the cars.
as for the engine oil 15.000 km is absolutely not acceptable. i wouldn't even go more than 5.000km

oil is essential for the engine and even though the bmw and the latest oil molecular structure can withstand a lot of abuse 70-90 bucks every 5k is nothing to invest.
i change my regular oil on 3.000km on my other cars and never had any issues.
the bmw gets it at 5.000km

It is not hard to change, but I left it to my mechanic to do

If you have the time take it the RMP, they sell the royal purple there and they can do it, shouldn't be too expensive.

Spark plugs done in August.

I've been stocking up a lot of the Castrol Syntec LL-01 oil. They were $7.40/L so I stocked up on those.

Kbimmer - How much did it cost to you to do the tranmission oil?

Which Royal Purple do I use? Not sure what to use here.

For the rear differential fluid
Red Line 57904 (75W90) Synthetic Gear Oil - 1 Quart

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-57904...ype=automotive

Would that be ok?

Decided to just use the OEM filter. Just don't feel right or comfortable hacking some piece off for a drop-in filter. Might get a intake system that just bolts on after without any tinkering.

Fyi, I saw man guys n tis forum having issues after an AT oil change. I know you are on MT but be aware that some jobs aren't trivial on this car.

Napa auto parts in Canada have Mann and Mahle engine air filters as well as Cabin air filters. they also have Wix filters for all BMW applications.
