Dealer feeding me crap?
I just got this e-mail from a sales associate...
"Just so you know, you can't legally bring a car purchased out of state into California. The DMV won't let you register it unless it's at least 7500 miles and a year old. You can call the DMV to confirm that." Is this true? I don't think it is... in fact I just checked CA DMV and found out that he's a moroney. |

hmm....i think it only applies to cars that are imported into the US. like if you buy a car in Canada or Europe or something. UNLESS you specifically ask the dealership to import a BMW for Germany.....i think

Its complete and utter bullshit, and if it were me I'd call him out on it. I bought my E90 330xi from a dealership in New Mexico and had it titled and registered here in Colorado. It was a little extra time and paperwork, but it was done easily.

Don't think it works that way in Cali. You just need the appropriate paper work. I have seen people bought cars in NV and register them in CA w/o problems.

I would call up a dealership in a town that borders California. I bet they will know the laws.
Edit: However, I do remember from my motorcycle days that there are emissions differences and that does play a role in if you can import the bike into CA or not. You should look into this more closely before putting down money. |

True about the emissions controls, but BMWs are certified in all 50-states and I think most cars are now not like days gone by.

CA has the strictest standards on emission so out of state cars may not meet those requirements. Usually if it says CA emission or 50 state emission then it's all good. If it's just 49 states emission then it's not including CA thus what your CA said is correct.

Is there any problem buying a car in CA and bringing it back to another state to register, etc?

The cars are 50 state compliant and the diesels will be as well.btw,I sell quite a few cars to people in CA and I'm in IL.....they might as well say you can't buy a BMW from any other dealer in CA ,only theirs.....

The easiest thing to do is lift the hood and look for the word "California" on the emissions label. You'd be surprised, many American makes do not have Calif. emissions if not necessary. Even if you live in east jibit and buy a car in NY, the GM car dealer deletes the Cali. emissions in some cases.
If you are a CA resident, and you try to register a car without Cali. emissions, you will be disappointed. In the case of BMWs, maybe they are all 50 state cars. The 335's are. Maybe your dealership could have worded things a little better. It's a bit strange when the pot calls the kettle black! |

Yes, I know it's hard to believe but...*gasp* your dealer friend fed you a big heaping pile of horse shit. And by the way, I didn't have to read the actual post to tell you that, just the title.
