Best Rim protector - Dunlop SP SPORT?
I have always been sensitive when purchasing new tires, to see how well the manufacturer has designed the tire with a built in Rim Protector. (18x8 wheel w/235-40-18)
Bought new Dunlop SP Sport Signature tires - and I am most impressed with the built in rim protector (not to mention the made in the USA quality). Anyone else find a tire with a good rim protector? Last edited by imaphaetonguy; 04-09-2010 at 08:29 AM.. |

Continentals are like that.
I'm surprised that there is not a bigger emphasis on this characteristic of tires. After all, we spend thousands on wheels only to have them eventually scratched because many of the tires dont have any form of protection. |

I had these same tires, loved them for the same reason, havent found anything better yet
then again, im running some poke, so rim protection goes out the window. |

I agree, just like the best insurance is not doing anything that would require you to use it. However, things happen and you're bound to get a curb rash every once in a while. Having a tire with a rim protector helps.

I have VMR 19" 8.5/9.5 on 235/265 Hankook V12's and the rim of the tire is exposed slightly less than the picture above. The rim was still exposed when i had General 275's. However, they were tucked nicely when i had Continental contisport2's (275's), so its not just a tire size thing. |

I have never hit a curb. I will never get curb rash, because I stay away from curbs. If I have to parallel park, I don't get close.

The only thing the rim guard does is allow you to lay the face on your rim on the flat surface without creating a surface scratch. 3-5mm of extra rubber will not save your rim from 2-3 tons of force. WindowsM is right about poke.

I beg to differ .. I rubbed against a curb with my stock wheels with the runflats w/ rim protection and the wheel had absolutely no damage

^That's a miracle. Two days after I bought my car I knocked a curb in a parking lot (as in I thought I might have heard something bit definately didn't feel anything). Result? Epic curb rash...
