You need codes stored in your ECU/DME or a recall on your model...
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/tsbs/

good start to see if there are any recalls or SIB's, armed with this, you can go to the dealership and see if they will update you

Thanks. Yea, I have neither any codes or a valid recall. Nuts.

A car with "squiggle" tire marks underneath it.
I thought that symbol shows for 2.42 and 2.43 though...

For those people who have used a "long crank" as the reason to go in, if the long crank cannot be confirmed with testing, do they still perform the DME update just in case?
No, the "long cranks" story did not work for me, nor did an occasional rough idle. The dealer said if it cant be confirmed through fault codes, BMW will not do it for free. He said they charge $175 for the software update. I dont know what to do, i am in wait and see mode. I am fairly busy but I was thinking about the possibility of trying another dealer, just dont know when I will have time, nor which dealer to try.

Anybody recommend a dealer in Nor-Cal that wont be a PIA about a software update?

$175 is downright inexpensive compared to what OC dealers are quoting me. They want about twice that. I don't mind paying, but I need a more reasonable price to work with.

I just called my dealer ahead of time and told him that my buddy had his 135 updated with new software and it seems to be running a lot smoother and I wanted the new DME update done as well. They told me there were no service bulletins for my car, but they would do it. They charged me $120 with no complaining or refusing.

I've spoken to other MT owners and they experience all of the above. If you're saying you don't and you have the latest dme update then updating may be the solution. Shiv can't reproduce (his shop car is always on the latest and greatest.)
Do you really think the DME version has something to do to with this... Your car is having another issue IMO.

I dont have the updated DME, my car is a 6 speed MT and I dont get an SES light if I rev past 6500 in fst.

Shiv already agreed that that is the problem. The new dme reads the maf differently

Is there a way to tell what version you are currently running? I have the door sticker indicating that the recall was performed but it was there when I got the car almost a year ago.

Alex.

Check your symbol when you turn dtc completely off, if it has a picture of a 3er drifting, then you are fine..

My X has a 3 drifting, lol... does that mean my X performs like a 3? I kid, I kid... Don't know what to tell you guys... Think of it this way, you pay for the update (if you have to) to get a boost in your performance (depending on what tune your using). Think of it as a BMW approved MOD

Maybe I wasn't clear enough but I was referring to two separate issues.

One issue being SES and half engine (reduced power) condition while idle or light crusing at random times (not WOT) with the mentioned maps (3-20 and 3-21).

Second issue is when revving past 6500 rpm the car suddenly feels sluggish (only in 1st gear) and only with procede enabled (no codes or SES lights). First issue has happened to various people and seems to be cured with latest dme update. Second issue has been confirmed by a couple 6mt guys when they try to reproduce. Frankie so far is the only one with 6mt that hasn't been able to reproduce and he has updated dme. We'll know for sure this week as my car is being updated as we speak.

Is there a surefire complaint that will get the dealer to do it? I just called and they told me I would most likely have to pay for the update if there wasn't a problem... and I cant very well tell them that my warranty voiding procede is throwing limp modes.
