Wastegate Rattle reduced after highway pulls?
Yes I've searched but after reading through 30ish threads on rattle and fixes and such I haven't found much about my situation and having it go away after doing pulls. Just wanting to know if anyone has found any correlation between this happening and the cause of their rattle.
So I've had WG rattle for a while. Had turbos replaced by dealer 15K miles ago (not tuned) and it's still here. I'm FBO. Rattle happens on accel and sometimes on startup. I've tried having a friend tune it out but with minimal luck. This makes me think that adjusting the arm won't work since I've already played with the WG position in tuning. But what I've noticed while datalogging is that after doing pulls or extended highway driving, my rattle is almost completely gone! I can barely hear it. It does come back after the car has cooled off though. However, driving around town it still rattles, even after being up to temp. It's only after several WOT pulls does it go away. I'm wondering if this is a tell that it may be something else but I can't figure out what. Vac lines look good, haven't checked boost solenoids at all though. Car has 50k miles. From my understanding the rattle is caused by worn out arms, bad solenoids, vac leak, possibly bad vac pump, improperly adjusted actuator arm, etc. Any ideas if my rattle is caused by another issue? The fact that it goes away after doing pulls is throwing me... If I can't come up with anything, I'm going to try adjusting the actuator arm and seeing how that does. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else before I started playing with that. EDIT: When I remove the tune, it gets worse. Not sure if that matters or not. Rattle can be caused by multiple pb? Vacumm leak but also arms actuator...
Mee my both turbos was replaced and my car had already a rattle just on deceleration around 3200 rpm to 3000 I never know why exactly the cause , when car was stock, vaccum line replaced and with news turbos , already this rattle especialy at this rpm range ??? |

Well I made a shim for under the c clip on the arm between the c clip and the rod end. I also shortened the rod 2 revolutions and still no difference.
How far can/should I safely go on shortening it? I wasn't going to go past 3-3.5... The only play I can feel is lateral which the shim partially fixed Also the piece coming out of the turbo housing where the wastegate pivots has 0.016" of play in it. Think that's enough to cause all that rattling? My shim: |

Shim helped but only a tiny bit. Went 3 turns in on the actuator rod and still no difference. Gonna put it back to where it was before tomorrow then just let it be. Not sure what else it could be since I've already checked vac lines as well. Only think I can think of is the vac pump or it's just how it is and I'm gonna have to live with it haha

I finally found mine after replacing both vacuum solenoids. I had my turbos replaced by the dealership for waste gate rattle and still had it afterwards with the dealer telling me " that's how BMW turbos sound" . I checked and replaced every vacuum line and did find some cracked ones which solved my hit and miss P030ff codes. But it wasn't until I replaced the vacuum solenoids (since I had 07 factory originals and noticed there was a pn and slight design change) that my rattle stopped altogether .

Thanks! Guessing it's the same for both?
Is there a way to check to see if the current ones are definitely the problem before dropping $250? College budget doesn't allow for to much trial and error haha. However, considering I've already done lines, played with the actuator and shimmed it, this seems like the next logical cause.. |
