I'm not very old, but I've lived in different states, and I recall property taxes on cars in VA, CT, MA, and NH. What does the Boston Tea Party have to do with anything? We live in the present, not in some documentary on the History Channel.
That's the thing I never thought made sense with leasing, as a renter, you have all the responsibilities of an owner, but the money you pay never gets applied towards ownership. |

If you fail to see the irony that's not my fault. BTW, I didn't forget which century we live in.

Missouri has property tax on vehicles, too. My dad pays more than the initial purchase price of his little utility trailer in "property taxes" every year.

I've also been a homeowner in different states, incl. MA. In MA, a 800k house say in Concord, where I lived, had a propety tax of 6200 per year. In NJ, the same house could be maybe 14k. Anyone from Westchester Co. NY want to chime in, or Nassau Co.? Perhaps the little guy can't control these matters, but at the same time, ignorance is not bliss.

NC has property tax on vehicles assessed by the governing county. In my case, the great Wake County Revenue Dept.
First year of ownerhsip = $520.75. Second year of ownership = $404.05 |

I think when all is said and done, for the same quality of life, overall taxes are similar but collected in different ways. If your property tax is only 6200, then there is a tax on the car for maybe 500-600 per year, and it declines every year. You may or may not have a good school system. You may have a high sales tax. You may have a high local income tax. Or you could live in metro NY and have high everything. Some would argue you get what you pay for.
Is it anything to brag about if you have low taxes? A coworker used to live in DE and his property tax on a 5-bed/3.5 bath was around $1000, and they have no sales tax, but a decent income tax. And every corp in America is inc. there. Is it any wonder his kids can't read? If you want to have an education system, there has to be taxes collected to pay for it. |

The NY state public school system isn't horrible but at around $15,000 per student per year it should be a hell of a lot better than it is. src |

I would be willing to bet that claiming his kids cant read is a little bit of a stretch. A school system is only as good as the childrens parents. Parental involvement has far more impact than any money that the tax and spend politicians can throw into the system. Sure, the system has to have money to operate and hire teachers and other employees but the primary factor is how much the parents care and push their kids to do well. In the town I used to live the oldest and most worn down school had by far the best test scores because it was the richest area with the most involved parents. I now live in a very rural mountain area in which the school is very new with all the latest technology but the educational development of most of the kids is far below average. This is due to the fact that most of the parents create little or no expectations upon their children. My wife is a high school math teacher and sees this every day. Sorry for the rant, but the politicians and school administrator whiners can stick it where the sun dont shine, that also especially goes for the NEA also. I am sick and tired of hearing about needing a new tax everytime they decide we need a new school. I suppose they will not be happy until we end up like the over taxed and socialist countries in Europe. |

yup, that's a local thing.
one thing, i am sure if you pay that kind of "intangible tax" (i think that's the word) i am sure you don't have to pay other kinds of taxes that us other folks have to. for example, in florida we pay no state income tax. in NJ, NY, these folks do. |

Massachusetts excise tax = taxation with full representation. This is the only place I've ever lived where a majority of citizens routinely vote in favor of increasing taxes each year beyond the maximum allowed by law.

When I lived in OH, the plates were only $50 a year, no matter what the value of the car - but then again, the property taxes were 3x what they are here. Bottom line: the gov't is going to take your money, it's just a matter of how they get it

In Virginia, especially Northern VA....we have to pay:
1. Property Taxes on Cars, motorcycles, & boats annually 2. Pay to have our cars inspected annually 3. Pay to have an emissions test on our cars annually/bi-annually depending on how much you want to pay upfront. 4. Let's not forgot the ridiculous civil penalities law that just got repealed that was charging people $1,000-$3,000 fines for as little as not using your turn signal or speeding. Geez...why do I still live in this state? |
