Cutting it kinda close



The shop manager said that I really only had 51 miles left to drive because at 90 miles it refuses to start (personal experience with a x535d loaner he was driving).

I've had this at 50 kms left one time,
Infidel, its your car telling you that it needs DEF filled else the car won't start.

I put in an emergency 3-4 gallons and it wasnt feeling it only after i drove a few kilometers! Man i was scared too..

Wow I have never heard of DEF. So I read its 67.5% de-ionized water and 32.5% urea, so your car burns off piss water... nice.

Here in Europe we don't have that on our diesel's.
I think it's strange that there are that difference from Europe to US.
What does it do? I know it's something with emissions but exactly ehat does it do?

Not yet but very soon you will. My understanding is from 2014(?) on there is little difference in emission requirements between USA and Europe. DEF is for lowering NOx emissions. As a Diesel runs with excess air it is a very good NOx generator. As I remember, DEF (Urea) is injected into the exhaust converting NOx to ammonia. Then the ammonia hits a catalyitic converter which breaks it down to N2 and water. It is run at about 1.5% of the fuel you are using so burn 100 of diesel and you will use 1.5 DEF. Around these parts DEF can be had for about $2 per gallon from a truck stop in bulk or about $4 per gallon in containers.

When EURO 6 comes into effect, higher power diesels will use SCR (selective catalytic reduction). It chemically reacts with the NOx in the exhaust to reduce it to H2O and N2.

BMW used the North American 335d and X5 35d as test platforms for the SCR systems they will be fitting to Euro-spec diesels.

Ironically, American emission standards are currently more stringent than EURO standards. Who'd have thought?

When have they not been? It was the first wave of emissions regs back in the 70s that killed the American car. Euro versions of Euro cars were highly prized back then because of their better performance, but they were for the most part illegal to import/drive...

...prior to EPA Tier 2 (for diesel vehicles), i.e. 2004.


As far as diesels are concerned, before EPA Tier 2, the Euro standard was more stringent both for particulate and NOx levels. Tier 2 Bin 5 is now more restrictive that EURO 4 and 5 in both categories for diesel vehicles and light trucks, and will be more stringent in NOx than EURO 6 (although more lenient by 20% with PM (particulate matter).)

Currently, EURO 5 allows up to 0.180 g/km NOx, or 225% of the EURO 6 limit. They can't reduce NOx by 66% relative, on higher-powered diesels without going to SCR (Urea/DEF/etc...)

^ 15miles… and I would not recommend that! I was road tripping and not seeing diesel stations!

Bad part was, when I finally found a station they had gas pump handles for the diesel and it took quite a while too fill with the fuel lock engaged :/

Yeah I got mine down to about 15-20 once or twice. I was near the station and driving her not too nicely. I think the most amount of fuel i filled up was 16 gallons?

Don't run out of fuel in a common rail diesel. you have to prime to fuel system to start. though i believe in our cars if you hold the start button long enough, it will do it.

I actually got down to zero. The dealer supposedly filled up my def tank after my first oil change(BULLSHIT!). Not even a thousand miles later my car said I only had 1,000 miles left. So after fighting with them for a while I finally decided to take my car in. That morning I had fifteen miles left until the car wouldn't start. So when I arrived at the dealership I had run out. Good thing the car was still running. Then I parked in there customer parking lot and turned it off, got my loaner and drove away Later that day when I picked up my car, my service adviser told me that they needed six guys to push my car into the tech's stall. I forgot to mention that I parked my car on a down hill slope.

As for fuel, I got down to zero two days ago. Every damn station I went to had pumps with nozzles that didn't fit I drove eight more miles to a station near my home hoping that the car would make it and luckily it did.

On a side note does anyone know if our cars come with an adapter for pumps with bigger nozzles? I read somewhere in the manual that our cars are supposed to come with one. I don't know if the dealer was supposed to give it to us or if it comes in a compartment inside the car.

Yes, and it shal be in the trunk. Right side, on top of battery cover, together with the tool set.

did you find it? It's a grey plastic nozzle adpator. In case it was never used it is in a sealed plastic bag with instructions. Your manual has references to it.
