Checked codes with JB4/USB when I got home and had

2D61
2C58

plus usual JB4 tuner code and DP code

Checked connections, been months since I have put the JB4 in but figured it couldn't hurt, cleared codes and didn't help, removed JB4 and still have limp plus the engine sounds a bit like a diesel all of a sudden.

Anyone have any ideas what broke and what the codes mean on N55?

Could it be the Vanos failure people are seeing due to the broken Vanos bolts?

Excellent guess! I hadn't got around to posting the resolution but that is exactly what it was. I pick up my car tomorrow. I am 4k out of warranty so I get the pleasure of paying for this repair...
