You might want to take a look at the pricing and how VW is positioning the Golf TDI. It is anything but but an econobox. In fact it is only one step away from what a BMW 123d would be in the United States market.

And then try to find one to buy.

Just imagine how many X3 sales would be lost if the E91 320d was on the lots.

Not many if there was a corresponding X3 oil burner to match it. I know that I would be in line to order one.

That is a start, but where is the X3 Xdrive30d? Some of us need a larger vehicle, which really needs the diesel.

Words cannot describe how much I want this car. Maybe the big boss at BMWNA will see this and realize he's been a fool allowing the X6 to exist and keeping such magical bimmers from us.

Words also cannot describe how much I hate cars like the Prius.... although oddly I seem to be ok with the Honda Insight... probably the paddle shifters.

very pleased with the performance of a car that's a close relative to mine. I managed around 1300 km on a tank few times but this is crazy good!

Impressive MPG.

I rented an '09 Mini Cooper Diesel in Italy last summer (which, to be honest, was heaps of fun though it did feel too big for some of the roads I was on). I was driving it pretty hard, still managed nearly 45MPG+. Had I lef the "engine auto-off" enabled, and done some motorway driving, I may have done much better.

While I understand why BMW is only offering Americans the huge, powerful diesels like the 335D (to keep the NA brand's image up), why don't they offer a "Green" Mini D? It would own the Hybrids MPG and wouldn't be as awful to drive...

Yeah but can they do 0-60 in 8 secs....

I've driven both and believe me the bluemotion VWs are not a patch on this!

I'm just waiting the new 4 cyl turbo petrol engines from BMW! VW sold a lot in Europe, but I want a strong response from BMW!
In my opinion a 4 cyl turbo petrol engine is better than a 4 cyl diesel engine...

To go out on a limb and take a guess maybe we will see the 320 d when we receive the new F30 Body style. BMW did say that they would soon offer 4cyl cars in the US. This would fit very well IMHO and help them reach the new fuel standards.

FRANKFURT — BMW plans to offer four-cylinder gasoline engines in the United States in an effort to meet stricter fuel economy rules. Introduction of the powerplants, equipped with the automaker’s next-generation twin turbochargers, “is the goal and we will do it,” Jim O’Donnell, CEO of BMW of North America, said today on the sidelines of the Frankfurt auto show. O’Donnell said the engines will allow the automaker to reach U.S. targets before 2015. Under federal guidelines proposed today, automakers will have to improve the fuel economy of their fleets by 5 percent annually before a national standard of 35.5 mpg takes effect in the 2016 model year. BMW will add a four-cylinder variant for its next 3 series in the United States by spring 2012, O’Donnell said. The automaker already equips its European 3 series with four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. BMW also is considering adding four-cylinder gasoline engines to its X1 and X3 crossovers and 1-series model in the United States. In Europe, the X1 will be available with a four-cylinder, twin-turbo diesel engine when it launches this fall. The X3 and 1 series also are offered with four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines in Europe. “We see potentially a significant market that could get to 100,000 four-cylinder engines” in the United States, O’Donnell said.

Hybrids are very popular in Japan, and make sense in any congested urban area. (They do no make sense in suburbia).

SUVs are common in other parts of the world. Their popularity in the United States has a great deal to do with national policies that treat them as trucks for certification purposes and gives them better tax treatment when used in a business. Add aggressive marketing by the car companies,a lack of critical thinking skills in the population and poor driver training and we get Soccer Moms who don't realize that they are driving a truck.

Stupid drivers are not unique to the United States. Ask a West German about how the unification of Germany has effected the roads. Or just drive in France.

The United States is at a big disadvantage with regard to road quality when compared to other industrialized countries for the simple reason that the country is so large. Germany could never afford to build roads to their current standards if they had to build as many miles of highway per 1,000,000 population as the United States.

I'm confused why the most poluting country in the world doesn't have diesels?? And why "everybody" drives huge SUV's and Pickups..
Over to my experience with Diesels-- Never been a huge fan, until the start of the new millenium.. Then it was a big revolution, and the common rail Diesel was out..
I've done quite a lot of rallying and rallcross driving with different cars, and I remember the first time I drove a "fast" Diesel.. It was a 2002 Mercedes 320cdi.. I remember that i wanted that torque in my WRX STI type RA racecar..
Today I drive a 320d with a new engine program(215hp, 450NM) And it just fantastic! Never raced it but I had a E46 325i on my tail once, and he had no chance..
Only downside is the sound outside the car... But I can live with that..

the only thing more ridiculous than hybrids is that this car is not sold here in the US; I own a X5 35d and love it so much I am now pissed off I cannot buy a 120d or 320d for a daily commuter !!!!! The 335d is great but I would rather the 320d with the crazy good gas mileage.

Wow. That is truly amazing. I wish we had it on the US. Image this car as a daily driver!!!!!! I would love to own this and drive the ///M on the weekends. This would make a lot of enthusiasts buy 2 BMW'S instead of one.
