2006 330i.

My BRAKE light is now on at 62K miles for the first time.

I was quoted about 1200 for full pads + rotor change by the dealership in BPORT, CT. Is that reasonable?

Also, does anyone know a more affordable and TRUSTWORTHY place in the state or in NY where I could get it done for under 1200.

I don't know what is and isn't reasonable at the dealership, but I just did a 4 wheel pad/rotor replacement:

Akebono Euro Ceramic Pads from tirerack.com for about 140 shipped.
Slotted rotors from brakeperformance.com 279 shipped
install labor from big-o was 165

Total cost: $584

And these brakes feel great for strength and should dust/squeal a whole lot less than the oem ones.

Crazed - you did it yourself? How difficult is it for an amateur to do. I am an engineer, I guess that would give me a slight head start.

I do all of my own brakes. Always have. They are very simple if you have the right tools , mainly the tool to compress the caliper. The other option is to find an independent shop buy the parts and pay them labor to do it for you. Either way you can save a grand easily by doing it this way.

Depends on what kind of engineer you are. If you are a software engineer, your engineering background my not help.

The tools you would need assuming you don't have any, are probably more than the labor, if you go to an independent mechanic to have the work done. You need a high quality set of metric wrenches – at least 8mm to 19mm (sockets, ratchet, flat wrenches), small screw driver, floor jack, at least two jackstands, metric nut drivers, torque wrench (to re-torque wheel and caliper mounting bolts), stiff wire (to hang the caliper while you work on it), brake kleen, breaker bar (to remove the wheel bolts), c-clamp (or caliper-piston compressor tool), needle-nose pliers, rags, hand cleaner, etc. And a safe, flat area to do the work at. If you plan on doing brake jobs into the future then the tools will be a good investment.

BrakePerformance has full set (f&r) slotted rotors (&free pads) for about $360. No idea if they are quality items or not.

I ordered slotted rotors through them, and so far so good, though I've only had them installed for a few days. I didn't get the slotted/dimpled because of some sound worries with squealing when combined with my ceramic pads of choice. My cost was only 279 shipped, so I have to say it seems really worth it thusfar. I have no idea of the quality of their pads. I love Akebono, so I didn't give that a real thought. One thing I will say though is that it takes them about a week to actually ship, as they say they zinc plate them after they are ordered, and that takes a few days. Shipped real quick once that was done though, went from LA to my door in SLC in under 48 hours.
