I heard people say "you have to go to a dealer experienced with the European Delivery process". Is this necessary? I mean it's placing the same order, just with ED isn't it?

This is entirely true, I had a guy who had no idea what he was doing. The day I was to leave to europe , the dealer @ herbchambers bmw here in boston calls me to say that the date may be changed because he sent in the application too late. jepoardizing all my irrefundable flight plans hotel bills etc.

I have never done ED myself (unless you call my current situation an 'extended' ED ), but I would think having a dealer experienced in ED would be a definate advantage.

Take the story of mister-e90 as an example. Ordering a car and having it delivered locally is not a big task. They punch the order in (hopefully it's correct), tell the computer what dealer the car has been ordered from, and wait for it to arrive. (For the sake of brevity I'm being overly simplistic)

But with ED, quite a few processes have to be harmonised. If the car is a week late getting to the US with a standard delivery, then logistically it's not a big deal (although it wouldn't be very nice waiting that extra week). However, if a ED car is a week late coming out of the factory, then that creates a headache for everyone involved (the customer, the dealership, BMW, hotels, airlines, etc).

Finding someone who has been there and done that with ED knows what can go wrong and because they have the experience behind them, they know what to do when there is a foul up.

Or at least that's the way I see it.

I know of 3 people personally that have done ED thru Chambers in Boston. Your guy was just a lazy idiot (and a liar).

I did mine thru BMW Gallery in Norwell, and was told that they had only done one before. When I went in to take redelivery, the guy that shows you all about teh car told me that they've done lots of them there. I think it's a common thing to make you think they have to do more legwork, and learn the ropes.. just to get you to pay more, or be forgiving if the idiot sales guy simply forgets to do his/her part.

As you pointed out, this guy was both lazy and a liar. Im intrested to know though, since you know people who've dealt with Chambers BMW, any positive comments at all from thier experiene with the dealership?

Definitely. A friend at work bought a Z4 and had such a good experience that he went back 6 months later to get a Mini S. The others that I know who have done EDs had not mentioned anything other than great things about doing the ED... nothing derrogatory regarding Chambers.
