335d picked as an All Star by Automobile Magazine

Automobile Mag picks its 10 favorite new cars, including the 335d, which it says is the most important car this year to get lost in the crowd.

BMW 335d | Our kind of fuel sipper.
By Ezra Dyer

Can we have a bit of fanfare, please? The BMW 335d is the most important car this year to get lost in the crowd. While the 335i and the M3 always show up in comparison tests, the 335d is an outlier - because, really, what would you compare it with? There's no other car that combines performance and fuel economy at this level. Sure, there are many cars that do 0 to 60 mph in six seconds, but they don't get 36 mpg on the highway. There are cars that match the 335d's fuel economy, but they don't top out at 149 mph. From behind the wheel, the 335d feels even faster than its numbers suggest, because the diesel six cranks out more torque than a 6.2-liter Corvette - 425 lb-ft. And despite the diesel's weight penalty (220 pounds more than a 335i automatic), the car maintains a 51/49 front/rear weight distribution, which means that the 3-series' sweet rear-wheel-drive handling survives intact.

Most diesels, even high-output modern ones, dispense their power in a sudden burst of thrust, followed by a pause for an upshift. Not this one. The 335d pulls hard all the way to its 4200-rpm power peak, and its standard automatic transmission grabs the next gear so quickly that an acceleration run is a relentless shove until you let off the gas (er, diesel). So the 335d is game for hard driving when you're in the mood, but it can also return subcompactlike fuel economy. And, in one of the coolest tax laws ever, the U.S. government will give you a $900 tax credit to buy this twin-turbo BMW.

If BMW built a unique-bodied hybrid that returned the numbers that the 335d does, it would be a huge sensation. But because the 335d looks like a normal 3-series (itself a perennial All-Star, by the way) and doesn't wear a hybrid badge, we already tend to take its achievements for granted. We shouldn't.

base price: $44,725
engine: 3.0L twin-turbo diesel I-6, 265 hp, 425 lb-ft

I loved the D when I drove it! Might trade up when my lease is done.

Rumour has it that the 335d engine has won the prestigous Wards International Engine of the Year for 2010 which will be anounced next month. Anyone know for sure?

The article speaks the truth. There is no other car that comes close to matching the 335d's combination of performance and economy. But because it's not a (silly, useless, pointless, counterproductive) hybrid, few people in the US give it any attention.

Few people in the US give it any attention because it's too expensive and supply is limited, as well as old perceptions about diesel still linger. Simple calculation would show that the gain in fuel economy in term of savings in fuel cost is not offset by the premium in price over a comparable vehicle, even over an extended period of ownership. The only selling point the 335d has is sellable only to enthusiast drivers. For all others who view driving is only for getting from point A to point B, the 335i is pointless.

The d is being noticed, as well it should be.

(I should note here that I think the 335i is still a *great* car, but it's had its share of press, and it's time for something else).
That was the most polite "FU" I have read in a long time.

ummm....for driving only from A to B, ANY BMW is pointless!

Did the "simple calculation" take into account the $4500+$900 of rebates/credits, or the stabilized lower price of diesel?

More importantly, not all d drivers are out there deluding themselves into thinking they are driving an econobox, nor did they make their purchase in the hopes that operating costs would offset capital costs (although many have already "broken even" in the truest sense of capital cost outlay and cash out of pocket every month compared to the far less discounted 335i).

Enjoy your 328i...for whatever reason it is you're driving one, and not the 323that a logical extension of your "335i(or d?) is pointless argument" would make the case for...

Having my E92 335D for over 3 years, and being a lone voice trying to explain its virtues to Americans - it is great to see that it is catching on. Simply a great blend of power, torque and economy.

If the 335d was in the price range of the current hybrids offered in the U.S. then nobody would buy a prius....BMW please please please give us more options like 330d and 320d!

It seems the attitude towards the 335d has really changed in the last 5 months or so. I had the choice of several cars in July and NOBODY wanted them. I wasn't even looking for a car but I couldn't turn down the deal. Now, my sales guy says there's lots of interest.

AMEN !!!!!

To your comments on hybrids, I would add "environmental time-bomb". The batteries in each and every hybrid cannot be re-cycled due to the presence of toxic heavy metals. The environmentally unfriendly, expended batteries must eventually be stored in secure warehouses.

And by that token, where the hell are the carpool passes for the Diesels? If Prius owners get them, why not the newer, more efficient, more environmentally friendly diesel owners?

That's because our cars are too much fun the drive. Enviro-wennies want you to have to own a bland driving car.

Too bad the 335d does come with a manual. If I were buying a new 335i I would seriously consider the 335d.
