6AT: whats to quickest way to downshift with
hello yal,
ever since i got the alpina TCU flash i noticed when I'm cruising around 75mph on 6th gear and i wanna pass a car i gotta almost floor it for the car to downshift. normally when i put my foot down the car just stays in 6th gear and i wait for the boost to come on but its kinda annoying. its not really a problem but i just wanna ask how you guys downshift. do u hit the paddle shifters? floor it? thanks a lot im also running COBB LT throttle so thats probably not helping but i can't stand ST with COBB, the boost is too unpredictable but i admit its fun. |

I don't have the Alpina flash yet, but yea, I noticed that my 335i doesn't downshift normally like other cars do under load (e.g. immediate WOT). I don't floor it much at all, but the few times I've done so, I had to wait for the boost to kick in to do my quick lane change and I was wondering if something was wrong with my car or what not.
But after reading another thread on the main forum about the "kick down" button, it seems this is normal.

I should probably get in the habit of using them, but I have several cars (one of which is a manual) so when I'm driving the 335, the paddles don't normally come to mind as a means for downshifting under load.

Kick the stick over to DS or Manual mode. In DS the car will be more responsive to throttle input and probably initiate a downshift. And in manual, you can obviously push the stick up or use the paddles to force a downshift. The normal D mode strategy is to keep RPMs as low as possible, which is great when cold starting the car or just putting around to get MPGs as high as possible.

I drive an alpina B3S when I hit WOT I get instant downshift.
I can even hit the kickdown button without accelerating which will put it in the shortest gear otherwise |

and yeah i agree with everyone else, paddles are the quickest way to smash, but does downshifting while in D give you the same power compared to DS mode. i really can't tell the difference |

most people dont know this... or just dont talk about it maybe?
While in D... you can downshift on a 6at by using your feet, tap the throttle really quick and let off... this will drop you into 5th (D5)... do it again and it will drop you into 4th (D4) (depending on speed). or... hit the downshift paddle on the steering wheel which will temp put it into M5, give the car enough throttle to make the pass, and the car will automatically switch back to D mode (D6) or... slam the pedal down and hold on, WOT always seems fast/more exciting when getting around traffic due to the visual reference points

The pedal tap doesn't work in d mode with the Alpina flash but everything else you said still does.
The amount of "power" you get out of the car is the same in d vs ds mode. |

Alpina Flash makes the transmission a completely different beast. That alone without any other parts is worth almost as much as tune and DCI mods. With Alpina: D becomes an eco mode. Stupid fast shifting at low RPM under load to maximize fuel economy. S makes DS even better and faster at changing gears. M makes it faster at gear changes and reacts almost as good as a DCT. My exhaust note on gear changes makes a lot of people think I have a DCT.

Standard throttle is a bit much in ST mode-seems to lurch away from every light like you're trying to drag race everybody, but seems especially suited to alpina "D" mode. Go back to standard throttle and reset your foot adaptations.
