Brakes for DD

I love the oem brakes. I'm thinking of keeping everything oem except for the rotors to drilled/slotted ones. Can I switch the rotors to something that won't cause squeaking etc.? Stoptech rotors?

Thanks!

Slotted I understand, but drilled? Why? Drilling destroys the rotor! Only the real deal that is cast with holes is actually worth it. But you are looking for DD brakes so won't make any sense from financial stand point.
Anyhow, I know this guy from my VW days:

Forget the drilled and get dimpled, slatted or both dimpled and slotted.

Yeah you're right. I never heard of dimpled until now. I'll check out adam's rotors... do you feel they are better than stoptech and other major brands?

Yes, better meaning: cheaper, great customization available and similar performance with major brands

Will doing Stoptech brake pads be better than OEM brake pads? I don't want to have brake noise or lose the bite.

You need to ask someone who used both. I have not. I don't like the dust from OEM so I would go with aftermarket just for that reason

Go with dimpled as it preserves the structural integrity of the rotor while giving you the slotted look. Check out Brake Performance - I posted a review - they work well and price was exceptional.

I also used brake performance http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1131951 that's my review. No noise with stoptech and brake performance rotors. I'm not worried of the structural integrity for drilled rotors. I'm not tracking or heating and cooling the rotors enough to make cracks, it's just my DD. I'm happy with them. Stoptech does have lesser brake dust than oem. Compared to hawk, I am not sure.

Zimmerman are OE spec or better.

There is no need for slotted or drilled on a DD. Slotted can sometimes be noisy and drilled holes can and will crack eventually.

I used to run StopTech stage 2 upgrade kit (Power Slot rotors, pads, stainless steel lines, and fluid). Had great initial bite, not noisy, and a lot less dusty compared to stock. More than great for a DD.

to op, i was in the same boat as you, loved the way the stock felt but wanted to do something a little different.
I ended up going with the z4 35i sdrive OEM rotor, they are two piece but not floating rotor, comes with an aluminum hub.

HAWK or Stoptech are a very good choice for DD

I have drilled and slotted GEOMET Rotors from ECS with cool carbon pads and really like them so far. Very quite after the bed in process and work perfect for my dd. Redstuff pads are also nice and I had those on my last e92 with slotted geomets, not much noise their either

I dont plan on tracking any time soon so not worried about the drilled, mostly got them for cosmetics because just got a really nice open face wheel

How did you like the redstuff? I've been debating switching up from Hawks to these.

For a DD

For daily driving, I've had great success with the Powerstop Z16 pads. They have plenty of bite and stopping power, relatively linear in feel, and virtually dust-free. As a bonus, they are soooo much cheaper than the big names. I run these on both my 135 and my X3. I also run Akebono Euros on the 330i, but actually prefer the Powerstops to them. Personally, I *HATE* the oem pads, especially on the X3. Way too grabby for my tastes - I much prefer a linear brake response. I ran Redstuffs on my 135 prior to the Z16s - they worked well enough but got noisy from time to time, and are hard on rotors. The Z16s perform just as well. I've also ran Stoptechs on a 330i ZHP - good pads but too dusty for a street pad (maybe half as dusty as OEMs which is still alot). Honestly, you don't need exotic pads for the street. The Z16s are cheap enough (it was like $65 total via amazon) that at a minimum it's a worthwhile experiment - if you don't like em, at least you're not out 100s of dollars like the other pads.

As for rotors, for street driving, you can use anything, and there's nothing wrong with slotted/drilled for the street if you prefer that look. On my 135, I use BMW performance knock-offs from Dura that I bought on amazon for around $260 for all 4. They've held up *really* well and perform absolutely fine on the street. For track duty, I switch the 135 to stock rotors and Ferodo 2500 pads - great combo for HPDE, but way too dusty and a bit noisy for the street.

I loved them! Good performance, not much brake dust, easy bed in process. No complaints at all! The only reason I went with cool carbons was to give them a try
