PICs NEED HELP: N52B30 Oil Filter Housing Gasket leaking?

I just did a regular visual inspect under the hood and suddenly noticed some leaked oil on the oil filter housing It literally sacred the $hit out of me lol. I got this car as CPO and have had it for for 1.5 years. It just hit 60K miles several days ago and has performed extremely well w/o any single problem..All maintance done BMW of El Cajon.. after a short search, I found lots of threads concerning this issue.. So,,, here come the pictures..

Is this a big issue? I will hit the road for a road trip to Yellowstone (~2k miles) I plan to have my oil changed in 10 days. How much is it to repair this at a dealer or I must DIY if dont wanna get ripped off?

That's not a bad leak, you can easily road tip to YNP. Have a BMW Indy do the repair for a few hundred at the next oil change if you want, but it can wait. My car has a leak a bit worse than that and I drive it 2,500 miles a month.

The DIY needs torx sockets, 1/4-drive extensions and a universal. The oil should be drained and residual removed from the OFH. The coolant should be drained to a point below the cylinder head because the coolant hose should be removed for a proper repair (to allow the new gasket to seat properly).

If you are moderately handy with tools, 1.5hrs of your time and $14 for the gasket for the repair. It was a breeze. I did not drain any coolant, it did leak a small amount but it was easy enough to top off when I was done. With the right tools (not expensive) this is an easy fix.

Yes, this is an easy DIY. I drained the coolant, but not the oil. You can clean the existing oil leak from outside the housing, and then watch it to get an idea of how much oil is seeps over time. That will help you decide when to change the gasket.

Consider putting permatex copper gasket maker as well as a new gasket.
Follow instructions on tube. And torque properly .... Over tightening makes it leak again.

This^

I did mine at the same time as an oil change, so there was no oil in the housing. I didn't drain the coolant; just took the hose off the housing and let it spill into a coffee can. I covered the belt etc. with rags just in case. Only about 1L of coolant came out.

It's tricky getting at the one bolt, but manageable. You'll need some U-joints and/or extensions to get at it.

Cheap, easy repair. Takes an hour or two.
