What's this thing called?
I just got this 2008 328xi Wagon. Today when I got home from work I realized this small piece of molding fell off. Does anyone know this is (part number) and where the best place for me to order a new one is?
Thanks |

New to these cars, but I believe it's the cover for access to the tow hook/hookup.
I'm sure others will chime in with where to buy a new one. Edit: read below. My knowledge has failed me

Headlight washer cover. Or, if you don't have them, just a cover. Check on www.realoem.com for the P/N. You can put your VIN in there and it will let you drill down to what you need. You can then go to www.getbmwparts.com and order it. It will come unpainted so you will have to get it painted as well.

Headlight washer cover- and they're not cheap.
Just getting one primed is around 30 bones. Painted, all in it could run you up to 50. Why is it missing? Well it could have fallen off, or some asshole plucked it off your car to replace theirs. |

Thanks guys. I think it just feel off on my way home from work. I noticed it was a little loose when I was originally looking at the car. I hit a pretty serious pot hole (I live in New England).

It's the external access port for the alternator. There's a status light in there that indicates if the alternator is communicating properly with the vanos solenoid. It's about a $1500 repair if you don't see a green indicator light.

it didn't fall off, someone stole it, to replace theirs.
now it's your turn to go steal one. there is only one washer cover thief in the USA. Everyone else is just trying to get their shit back. |

I am disappointed in this thread. All of these jokes, trying to mislead a new owner.
That hole is air induction for the turbos! Cover it up too long and they flow backwards and only work when you're reversing. |

Hmm...I thought that's where the transponder switch is located. Unusual that the cover came off. Someone possibly attempted to hijack your car.

Dude, I once worked on a Plymouth Horizon and it was a b!tch to tighten up the alternator belt. Then after I was finished I realized there was a hole in the front (near where this headlight washer opening is) designed to allow you to put a long extension on a socket through and tighten up the belt easily.

I thought that thing fell off when the transmission was cooked. Kinda like the red thermometer in a turkey.

Same thing happen to me OP. Monster pothole shake my baby's tooth out. I dodge potholes like religion, but this winter sucks. Gonna go to the dealer and order a pair soon cause it's quicker. Remember to tape that hole up in the meanwhile so stuff don't get in (less drag coefficient too)
