Limp Mode While Tracking Car

I have a 2008 335i that I have been tracking at HPDE events at Summit Point for a little over a year. At these events I get four twenty minute sessions on the track. The last couple of times the car has been going into limp mode one or two times per session. It would do so before but now it is happening more frequently. Probably because I am pushing the car harder as I get better. I can get the car out of limp mode by bringing the car into pit lane, turning it off and restarting. It seems to go into limp mode under hard breaking and turning not under acceleration. The car has the following modifications:

Dinan Stage 2 ECU Upgrade
Dinan Oil Cooler
Dinan Stage 1 Suspension
H&R Sway Bars
Power Slot Slotted Rotors
Hawk HP Plus Brake Pads

I have had the codes pulled but there weren't any codes that explain why the car is going into limp mode. Although I can resolve the problem on the track I want to figure out what is causing it to happen in the first place. Anybody have any ideas?

Did you get a limp mode with a CEL? Or just reduced power? Also, which codes were triggered? Those should at least give hints on the problem with your car.

Typically they are limp mode without CEL. Twice it was with CEL. I will check with person who read the codes to get the exact code he got for the CEL. If this counts for anything the CELs would clear in time but not after restaring the car.

you missed the stickied 600+ post thread on the issue? :-)

Post your scanned codes so we can troubleshoot further (ideally on the sticky thread so others can benefit from the answers too). The codes will remain stored until someones explicitly deletes them.

The indication of a CEL light means you're having a problem other than water/oil overheating, perhaps a Vanos or sensor problem.

Thanks guys. I posted before I saw the sticky. I will post the codes to the sticky when I get them.

what temps were you seeing on the track?

I am surprised you have a Dinan stage 2 flash but no FMIC?

I do consistent 30 minute sessions at Road America (4.1 miles, three extremely fast, long straights) and never see temps above 260 with my mods

invest in a ER competition oil cooler, worth every penny and you'll get your money's worth on the track

No really sure, i like the idea of a lower thermostat, but from what i heard the single cooler just wont do. need the surface area to cool, hence the dual cooler setup.

i actually took my thermostat spring and plunger out yesterday and running maybe 10 degrees cooler here in florida, still worms up the same time. so no need for a different thermostat if you can just take the spring and plunger out.

just an opinion, but if you have the money and the chance get the dual setup.

Exactly the same thing happened to me at the track: limp mode under hard braking and in turns, but only when oil temp exceeded 250F.

Sometimes got CEL, which persisted even after restarting the engine; went off after a couple of minutes of waiting with the engine off.

Gonna pull the error codes tomorrow and follow-up.

marty-k, did you get the chance to find out what it was?

Ok so I pulled the codes and there was only one:

29F3 Fuel low-pressure sensor, electric

It's not going away when clearing the codes.

Do you guys think a faulty low-pressure fuel sensor could this cause limp mode on deceleration?

Limp modes always produce a 3100 code, the fact you're missing one and that the other code persists after clearing it, means you have a persistent sensor problem that needs to be fixed.
